Can any body tell me the pro's and con's of a 14tooth sprocket on my 400? I know it will give more bottom end grunt but how much slower will it go ?

i think the rule of thumb is 4-5 mph gained/lossed with a 1 tooth difference up front

so subtract 4-5 mph from your current top speed

Almost a necessity for the dunes, imo.

well around were i live you have to take alot of road to get to trails so actually im in the high rev of 5th alot. But I think if the power gains are pretty good i could sacrafice some speed

Stick with the 15 and learn to use the clutch. With all the new machines out there you can't afford to loose speed if you want to keep up.Yes it does feel better, but the top end speed is where you make your passes.

ur gears will feel shorter In a drag race, I start in second because when I start in first second gear comes really fast and so does third. I don't like the 14, but to lazy to change back. The only place I like it, is when I'm racing up steep dunes. Everyone else is shifting down to second, when I'm in third all the way up. Not having to shift down saves a little time. My 14 only cost $8 from Rocky Mountain, so I gave it a try.

I went down to the 14, I noticed that my gears were shorter and I lost a little speed. Not that much though.

ive got a 14, 15, and 16th

14 is good for woods, chasing cattle, and going out with all my friends on 4x4's 15 is good for about anything else
i havent even tried the 16 yet, i havent had the time and i would need to modify my casesaver

People keep talking about this without qualifying it with the type of terrain they ride in. Again, bring your quad out to my trails and a 14t will outrun a 15t every time. Your clutch can only take so much. Once in a while the trails I ride on make me wish I had a 12t up there, but I personally think the 14t is perfect for the type of riding I do. Yes, it makes 1st gear short and very quick, but just get into 2nd sooner... when you end up on a 45 degree rocky hillclimb where the rocks are coming loose and you have to dart back and forth across the trail constantly to avoid rocks sticking up like daggers that will eat your skidplates alive, the 14 tooth helps a lot. I also like it on the dunes. Next time I take a trip to somewhere with a more wide open track/trails, I'll pop a 15t or 16t back on there. Just make sure NOT to make a decision soley based one someones "14 tooth is too slow" opinion when they haven't even described their riding conditions. It's like prescribing medicine before the illness has even been diagnosed!

i felt the 14 tooth was too much wheel spin in the dunes, specially on the drag strip - i got killed. but it could also be my tires (geckos) and i suck pretty bad too, but when i put the 15 back on i could atleast put up a fight

you are right, type of riding plays a big part. i also would think rider size is a factor, a 220 lb rider might like the 14 tooth more than a 180 lb rider

Good points. I'm about 200lb myself. You bring up a good point in the sand, though... the 15t probably is better for drag racing, especially on flat ground or slight inclines. The place where the 14t really helped me was the tall, steep dunes. When climbing a 300 foot or taller dune, you really start to bog down towards the top. The 15t required me to use 1st gear, whereas the 14t allowed me to use 2nd and even 3rd a lot more often, making the steep climbs much faster. The bottom line is, as cheap as sprockets are, people should just buy a couple of them and figure out what works best for their types of riding. :)
