View Full Version : Enging making loud noise at high RPM

01-11-2002, 07:58 AM
I have two buddies with 2002's and they both have this problem. When reving the engine a loud vibration type noise comes from the engine. The noise sounds like the motor is tearing itself up. One of my buddies took his back to the dealer and they are playing dumb. There is also a significant lack of power on these bikes. Anyone else have this noise on their 2002? Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

I don't have a clue without hearing the noise. The only things I could think of may me the valve are not set right or something is loose in the engine?

Have these 2 new bikes been taken in for the 10 or 20 hours service yet???

I also have the same noise. I noticed it the other day when I was riding in the snow. It was coming from the top end. I put it back on the truck instantly and took it home. After toolong around on it I thought it was the plastic peice ontop the engine below the gas tank so I took everthing off and started it. Well it's form the top end. So I checked the valves and .004 and .005 perfect. It sounds like a couple ball bearings in the head. I'm going to change the oil and see what happens. It's a 2002 and It's got 65 hours on it. Well maintained too. I have until march before the warranty is up. Thinking about buying an extra year warranty!!!
If I find out what it is I'll post back.

Negative, they are brand new. THe sound is definetly coming from within the engine.

Im not sure if its the same sound or not, but when my engine was making noises at high RPMs, i eventually realized that it was my valves. ALso something to check is your head pipe connection.

mine makes a noise at idle, it sounded like change falling I just realized it is because I have aftermarket springs that is why it is so loud

This sounds more like somethings loose on the outside but we've checked everything. I dont think its the valves cuz its not a ticking noise. It makes the noise in neutral as well as in gear. Anymore ideas?

could it be the rev limiter.... if ur at high rpms....

Thought that too. But I swapped rev limiters with him and the noise stayed.

If these bikes are brand new and haven't had the 10 or 20 hour service on them what are they being revved real high up for? I'm assuming that you're talking about a noise at high RPM or is this noise constant throughout the RPM range?

I couldnt tell you at what RPM but it is not 9000. Probably around 6,000-7,000

Would the type of gas cause this? Some areas add methonol to the gas during the winter months to help reduce emmissions. Around here it can be up to 10%.

Also doesn't the sound of ball bearings/coins/marbles coming from the engine indicate low octane fuel?
