well the z is FASTER, no question about it,
i know i raced a z with a wb slipon, and filter, and smoked it. then again we switched quads, and i still won:D

i hvae no problem what so ever keeping up with or beating modded z's..but in a drag race thats a different story

Drag racing is as much about driver as anything else.

For instance the last drag race that we went to my son got second to ChadEXer. My sons is still stock bore and stroke. In the same class was a z440, Chads 505, a thumper racing 440 and another 400 that I heard was a 465.

It takes skill and a little luck;)

If anyone has the ability to host a video, I have film of my z400 (with theo racing it ,100lb wife),and she is racing a 400ex, with pipe (full wb), k&n, jetting, air box all open, 14 front, 7 paddle haulers. Both quads have the same mods basically, and the chick are the same ability and weight. If you have been to Little Sarahe Utah, you know that the hill is big enough to take out the jumping the start or rider ability ect. My z beats it by at least 15 lengths, probably more like 20-25, it wins every time. BTW a stock piped Z, with k&n, 13 tooth front jetted, lid off, is right in between the other two. All three bikes are wifes and withthe wives riding. they all weigh withink 100-110 and have the same ability. Z' arefaster, and gain even more with a pipe than an ex.

lets hope your z400 beats her...a 14t sprocket is 1th down from stock..i had one and takes away a LOT of topend.....

When you ride the dunes, you don't need top end, how many times have I needed the extra 5-10 mph, maybe .......never
BTW my z has a 13 tooth front, what do you think about that?

Z's are faster stock for stock.......no questions about it.....im a honda fan but come on, im not gonna pretend the 400ex is still a contender out of the box........ITS NOT!...............now in your case you might of beat him, but he was doing something wrong,....like not shifting outta first gear........

i raced him 5 times and i won 5 times. the second time i dragged him i pulled a cat walk for about 10 feet and i still beat him.

weight makes a big difference too. every 10lbs=1hp

06-23-2003, 02:41 PM
hp does not equal top end....gearing is what calcualates top end

You know I have to agree! Its pretty amazing that there was a Z440, and Thumper 440, and a Trinity 465 among quite a few other bikes and down to the last 2 and I was racing a stock 400EX!! Josh just knows how to give it he!!

I cant agree with you nacs. because if you took a stock 400 and pinned it in 5th gear you'll never hit the limiter, you just level out at an RPM because the quad hit where it doesnt have the torque and hp to go any further. But if you did the same lets say with a 440, overall your going to have more torque and hp to push your 400 into higher rpms with the same gearing thus higher speed than the stock 400.

Just my $.02:D

well, ive hitten the rev limiter before on my STOCK 400ex..then i got a pipe and air filter..i still hit the rev limiter just as much..did not feel a difference in top end, but could feel more power on tap

i seen 400's smoke z's around here both on the track and drag. stock vs. stock, few mods vs. few mods. myself i care nothin about the z's. i wouldnt trade my 300 for one. hondas have their own look. a z copied the looks off of the raptor which alot of newer quads have done. i rather have a 400 over a z any day

Thats the problem with Z's they can't take it, everyone I knew was running out to get them now they are broken or up for sale, In NH the trails are tough on a quad, your in third gear most of the time so topend doesn't matter it is handling and durability, LONG LIVE THE EX:macho

northeast400 where are you from in nh? your right though..the trails are rough. i stoped riding them because of it.

anyways, about the z's. they are a fast bike. not so much stock though. Mike walsh has a z440 done up for tt. and he has a full out crf450 for mx. him and his brother nate dragged, and they said the z took off faster, pulled harder, and had more to go.

as for a 400ex...they have thebest handling since an R (IMO) but thier air cooled SHOC is too little to keep up with other quads. Honda will retaliate soon, trust me:devil:

I've raced Z400s and Kfx's . my 400 had nothing done but the spark arrestor cut out and I never lost to one.
Now my bike runs 110% better, I think the diffrence would be much better this way.

well stock for stock a 2004 400ex should beat a Z400 with equal riding skill levels, bec the carb

why do people think the ex motor is old and out dated when it looses in a drag to a z with higher comp z=11.3 ex=9.1 a bigger carb and bigger valves than the ex. if you did the same things to the ex it would probably smoke a z

so i guess what i'm hearing is stock for stock, honda wins. put a 440 kit in each, and the z wakes up with more power than a crf.

maybe the z and kfx weren't made to stay stock:confused:

I havent a clue who these knobs are on these z's and kfx's but you guys must have some serious drag racing problems because stock for stock or mod for mod the Z or Kfx 400 will flat out kill the 400ex most anywhere...Yes the Z maybe alil less durable but when gusseted and modded they are tough to beat...I have a 50 kfx440 sitting in the shop and it flat out hauls...
