I have a 400ex (mods below) and I am thinking about doing some sort of airbox lid like ehs racing and plugging off the snorkel. The one thing right now is my quad pulls really hard from mid to top, but seems to be a little hesitant down low, just doesnt have that low punch that I want. I was wondering if I drop the clip one position down from stock, would this maybe help my low end a bit? I have the clip at the stock position now, and thought maybe I could get a little more low by movin it. my dad did the same thing on his LT500 and the low end woke right up. I am also running a 40 pilot, would a 42 be a good idea? or is the 40 ok? Separetely, I know also if I do the ehs type lid I am gonna have to go up on the main jet, but should I also change any other jetting? Let me know. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your throttle cable might need adjusted up at the throttle housing..:ermm:

Needle clip on the 2nd notch from the bottom is a pretty common location and works great...

Needle clip on the 2nd notch does this mean it will be leaner.

Thanks for the responses on the Needle Clip position, but anyone got any comments on the second part of the post, about the 42 pilot, and about the change in all of my jetting with an ehs lid? Also, to get the pilot screw adjusted right, do I do what my clymer manual says, just turn it in and out to get highest rpm method, and do you really need to do this using a tachometer? Thanks again in advance.

I'm no expert on jetting but you should be fine with the 40, it is mostly trial and error for fine tuning. You might want to go up a size or two for the lid.
If you really want a punch at the low end you might want to consider a gearing change....
Maybe a 14 tooth front or a larger rear sprocket, I don't remember the incriments for the rear at the moment though...

Going from 40 to a 42 is not a huge gain but it will make it start easier and wouldn't hurt to upgrade I don't think.. A stock 38 and 40 pilot look identical....While a 42 looks like a whole different beast..

Needle clip on the 2nd notch from the bottom will help a bunch too..

One front tooth equals 2-3 teeth in the rear, Opposite ways though. Less teeth in the front is the same effect as more in the rear. If you drag race anyone, don't gear lower. I lost to a piped 300ex with a 14t on my 400!:eek2: :eek2: Now I run 15/36 (higher than stock) and have longer ranging gears to run most quads.:)

With the air screw, just adjust that like it says in the manual? I have the clymer manual, its says to do it using a tach. Can you just do it by ear, cause I would assume that you could? Also, anyone have any experience with the ehs racing air box lid, and feedback on that would be cool. I have really read nothing bad about it on the forum. Thanks in advance.

i would think the 160 main may be a little large. you are just running a T-4 slip with a K & N, correct? i would think a 155 should be close? but then again, i don't know what elevation your at or the temperature your riding in. by the way, they don't make a 158 or a 162 keihin jet do they?

They make a 158 for sure, not sure about 162

The numbers go in increments like 150, 152, 155, 158, 160, and are like that in the 160's 170's and so on.

well trust me i have had alot of jetting issues, that were solved on here, with my mods i have a dj160 main, 40 pilot, and clip DOWN oe from stock, but i have to tinker with the pilot screw, cause it is a wee bit rich somewhere.
but the bottom SCREAMS alot better than stock, me and my z-400 friend went riding, and he was amazed, he thought i had more secret mods done:D
