Just so you guys have a heads up..I am in the process of getting all the exact info on the new laws, but here is the meat of it. Basically you can't have any alcohol on the dunes period, and if they see you drink it somewhere else and get on your quad and ride you will get a DUI (driving under the influence) so you loose your quad and your driving license.
Also no drink in MOST state or national park inside oregon.

I heard of one guy who got a ticket, in a state park. He was out drinking a coke and the park ranger decided to check his cooler and found beer.

So I have called into the proper people and will get all the facts, but since this takes a little bit of time, I just wanted to let you guys have a heads up if you are headed there this weekend. This is a brand new law that just went into effect 2 weeks ago.

I thought the DUI law has always been in effect?
My understanding is that you can have alcohol in developed campsites, just not "on the sand" even if you're camping on the sand.

Well if how I read their whole page...you are going to be hard pressed to find a place that isn't "developed"...Interesting that you couldn't drink out on the dunes at say "Winchester" where the area that you park in IS developed..but you can't camp there, you have to camp in on the dunes about 100ft..so would that be legal then..hmmmmm one has to wonder.

I wrote them with a bunch of questions and asked for someone to talk to and for a writen complete copy of the law.

I don't ever drink on the dunes or off when I ride so I really don't care, I just wanna save someone else from that fatal problem.

If you are camping on the sand you cannot have alcohol anywhere, vehicals, coolers, campers, tents etc....none whatsoever.....So I guess Winchester is a "dry" area...

If you are in a campground it is allowed.

I do like to have a beer or two between rides but I don't get anywhere near intoxicated while ridding. That is just plan stupidity. We camp in the campground so the law wont affect us much.

It is unfortunate this law has become neccessary because a few dumb@sses:rolleyes:

Last time I was in oregon was last summer, and there were sign everywhere talking about how no open sand camping would be allowed anymore. Now you guys are talking about camping in the sand vs. in the campground... I want to head up there soon and would prefer to just kick it on the sand. I think it was coos bay area where the signs were... is this the only spot they shut down sand camping? Or did they decide not to shut it down and do the no alcohol thing instead? basically, if I head up there with no camping reservations, am I going to be able to find a place to camp?

Ok...as far as Coos Bay...I don't really know of any dunes there. They may have some specific laws as far as the ocean front areas there, I am really not sure. But as far as the "Winchester" dunes area I think it is perfectly fine, I see and almost run over people all the time camping out there. Now Spinreel on the other hand I haven't seen anyone out there..so that one may be off limits.. same with Hauser/Boxcar area.
So not sure if that answers it for you..but to the best of my knowledge you can kick in on Winchester.

you can sand camp anywhere in houser, spinreel or boxcar, just need a permit on big weekend like the 4th or memorial day. no alchohol is allowed and hasnt been for about 2 months on the sand...only in camping areas or staging areas.

Ok here is what I got back in email

-----------------Here was my question to them--------------------------

I heard that the laws had just changed concering alcohol in state parks and on the dunes, can you please direct me to where I can read about it, or someone I can call to get accurate information on this..

Thanks

Here is what they sent back

Actually the new laws apply to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (ODNRA), not Oregon State Parks. You can contact the ODNRA at (541) 271-3611 or visit the website http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw/alcoholban/
which discusses the alcohol ban.

Hope that helps everyone out..I am going to call and ask them some specific questions, and if I find out anything interesting I will post it here.
