i have done some research and found out what the engine builders use as the "heavy duty cam chain" for the 400ex. the cam chain that they sell for $90 to $100 is the crf450 cam chain. the crf450 chain is only $25.68 from service honda. i installed the crf cam chain tonight and it works fine. the timing marks on the cam sprocket line up and the chain fits the cam sprocket just fine. the crf chain has a "U" shape on the top of the side plates and is wider than the stock cam chain. also it has the same "M" markings on the side plates like the stock chain and has the same number of links as the stock chain ( 112 links). the crf450 cam chain is more "heavy duty" than the stock chain. i paid $42.77 for the crf chain, right cover gasket, and shipping. if a engine builder tries to tell you that they are not the same chains think about this, if you where making about a $50 profit from each chain and you might be able to sell 1,000 chains well you do the math. i almost forgot the part number for the crf450 cam chain is 14401-MEB-671.

Wow thats awesome that the CRF chain fits on the trx , if i get a new chain thats what ill do.

Sounds good to me, people put cr clutches and what not in our quads, so anything is possible.

What about us guys that have had heavy cam chains since long before Honda released the CRF 450?

yes, some of the engine builders were selling a HD cam chain before the crf450 was released. there is another engine that has a cam chain that has the same numbers of links (112) as the stock chain but i do not know which one.

my stock cam chain was streached and in my search for a HD cam chain i called mike at FDO. he told me that the HD chain that pro fab sold was a OEM chain from another engine.

when gabe made some posts of his sparks HD cam chain he noted the the chain was wider than stock, had thicher plates, and had the same "M" markings on the side plates as the stock chain. the "M" mark stand for morse.

the crf450 cam chaim is wider than the stock one, has thicker plates, and has the same "M" markings on the side plate. as far as the sparks HD chain h3ll they could have just removed links from a chain that was longer. there is a tool that will repin the links on cam chains. i think sudco sells one i am not for sure.

pro fab has reviews on here and atv connection of the HD cam chain. the crf450 cam chain has a (U) shape on the thinner outside links and if you look at pic in the reviews at atv connection (enlarge it) of the two chains that someone has in his hands you will notice that the HD chain has the same U shape on the outer thinner links.

the crf450 chain is alot more HD than the stock chain for sure.

i think i will look into the HD cylinder head studs that is being sold. the HD studs just might be OEM studs from another engine that is 1mm longer. if someone that has installed the HD studs would post the size of the tap that they used, the size of the studs, and the lenght we might be able to find something out. ;)
