I'm constantly up shifting, finding out thats all there is. I'll be in 5th gear and shift up, already in 5th, this things slow.

i hade the same problem i thought mine was slow i hade 18s on back with stock gearing so i put 20s back on and a 36 rear sprocket the other day my brother on his blaster could run right along side of me easy once i put the 36 rear sprocket on and 20inch tires i smoked him at least a block ahead in a 3 block long drag if we could of kept going i would have been light yrs ahead of him as it was i couldnt even barely see his head light and i was only like 3/4 throttle he said he was wide open brand new blaster he rides and i got a 400ex stock motor but that 36 sprocket did it for me i am happy now:D

I run 16/36 gearing and a modified motor, and before my recent work, I was at about 77 with 18's. I don't know why anybody would need to go faster than that, unless they are drag racing, because you start to lose a lot of bottom end when you gear higher. I have the motor to pull my gearing, but I see people on stock bikes with 16/36 gearing, and they complain about acceleration... duh. I am happy right where I am because I have awesome acceleration, and when I get into open places, I can open it up and I feel it has plenty of speed. Maybe its just me, but I thought there was more of a point to modding a bike than to see how fast it will go.

How much have you done to your 416? Just wondering because I just went to a 16t front and I was happily surprised with how much it helped me. I was affraid that it would gear it too high but it seems to have ADDED power. Appears that it lets the mid range power work instead of just revving right through it with the lower gearing. After discovering this, I was considering going with a 36t rear just to see what would happen, but again, affraid of getting it to high at having it fall on it's face in the low range. I'm not sure if the motor has enough beans to pull that gearing. I give a swag of close to 40hp with my motor mods. The majority of my riding is in the sand which takes grande hp so I don't know if I can go any higher.

Well, I have the 416 bore, Hotcams stage 2 (I would REALLY rather have some other topend cam though), full race porting, FCR39, Hetricks full exhaust, and running pretty close to 11.8:1 comp. I haven't ridden it yet with the latest porting, or FCR 39, but it had plenty of go beforehand to pull my gearing, but keep in mind that I am running 18" tires. If you run 20" tires, it will be way too high.

I've only been able to get mine up to 65mph at full throttle in fifth gear on a stock 400ex.....

...think it's time for a pipe and rejetting:macho

hey 2000 400ex, did you adjust the throttle cable? also, yours may not be that slow because speedometers vary quite a bit.

cals400ex, no I haven't touched the adjustment on the throttle ever since I've had the quad. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Your running 20's, 36 rear sprocket, what front sprocket are you running, stock (15)? did you try a 14 or 16 with the 36?

skemp,

Our motors are pretty identical. Mine is 11:1 and has a Web "all around" cam. The grind is pretty close to your stage 2 cam. Also have an advanced timing key (although it probably doesn't help much). I am running 20" tires so I'm still thinking it might be a little much to go to the 36t.
You will like that FCR. I noticed about a 2-3 bike change over 300' of sand over the stock carb. I added the carb about 3 months after the other mods. You should have a good improvement since you are also getting the head worked. Who you getting the FCR from? Mine came from Sparks and I didn't have to adjust a thing. Although, it does run a bit on the lean (and hot) side.

I bought the carb off of Ebay, but it is from Sparks.
I don't think you would like the 16/36 gearing with 20's, unless you can always be flying and on flat ground (two things that don't really happen in sand). I put my 20's on, and it flat out screamed when it was topped out, but it took a while to get there... You just lose so much torque that route. If I were you, I would stick with just the 16 tooth, you could try the 36t and see if you like it, but that could be like $25 down the drain if you don't.
