Can you guys help me decide what motor to build for my 400ex. I was thinking about a 500 but I still want it to be reliable. I also was thinking about a 440 but everyone has one. So 465 or what? HELP!

I want good low end power for woods racing But still be fast on the straights. I don't want to worry about the z400's passing me on the straights.

What is your thoughts and why?

440's are fast if done right..dont know much about the 465 but i say they would be pretty fast if done right too..a couple of guys on here got 400's done over 500 and i hear that they are pretty fast..but send your engine to TC, curtis sparks, or FDO to build ya a strong engine..look into FDO i hear they are really good and pretty quick on turn around

Go with a 440 stroker. Great low-end power and with a mid/top cam they scream. I love mine I have no trouble with Z's. Mine has been like a best friend. It hasn't left me hanging yet, good reliability.

Are you going to build it yourself or send it off? Sparks lead time is one year right now, but they have a pretty wicked alcohol 465. the other kits are very decent to.

How about my motor? Its nothing too exotic, but she still screams.

Good luck and let us know what you build!!

I would build it me self I know how to do it I did quite a few. but if they will do it for a not too expensive i would just send it out but not way am i waitong 1 year for my motor. i am leaning towards a 465. I will have a aftermarket rod put in it too.

Any companys any better than the next? i don't want it to wild for the woods riding and racing is my primary riding i do.

DOES ANY ONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT 465 MOTORS HOW MUCH MORE POWER DO YOU GET OVER 440 IS IT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY

A 465 motor is basically a 426 I believe or 416 stroked I think 4mm to get a 465. If you leave stock bore and stroke it you get a 440 stroker, up the compression to run on 110 and you'll fly mean.

The 440 wills tay cooler since you are still on stock bore, and if you run 110 your bike also runs cooler with the higher octane..

here's a pic from Trinity which describes basically how it works..

I do not want to run race gase I went through that with my 310R. Not very close places to get race gas.

Powroll has a 465 stroker good price too anyone hear any thing bad about powroll?

If your worried about having too much power, id just put on a bigger front sprocket that way is it still real powerful, but not as powerful, and faster in the straights.

I want awsome low end power. I want to change my gears so I can pull a gear longer before shifting. The only way to do that is to up your gear ratio. With that I will need more motor. I really bog my motors in the woods.

Powroll is a class act. I bought my 440 kit from them and installed it myself. It is a 416 bore with a +4 mm stroke. I'm running 10.5-1 JE piston with an XR400 base gasket so my compression should be a little higher than 10.5-1. I can run 92 octain pump gas but it really rips with a 50/50 mixture of 110 and 92.

Bud Fischer of Fischer Cycle, makes some mean motors. i've got his 416 right now and i can keep up with cannondales no prob. when i drag my friends moto, we are pretty close, he beats me, but i also am still running a stock carb. once i get my 41mm it will really haul. He also has a stroker crank which i am planing on getting next season. that will take my CC's up to 440, and my quad will flat out haul.

oregonrider89 have you raced any of the 440 bore bike how do they compare?

Not bragging, but I beat almost all 440 bore kits I race. My stroker seams to rev quicker and it doesn't sign off as early as the 440 bores. I lost to a hot 95 lb chick last Labor Day, but when some dude about my size was racing it I was beating him. Thats the only time I can remember. If you have the money, go with the stroker.

Str8Wicked a 440 stroker is a 416 bore with a +4 stroke. A 465 is a 440 bore with a +4 stroke.

My FDO 463 stroker is best motor I have ever come across for what you are looking for. TONS of low end and still revs great in the fields. I notice I have to shift a lot less than other EX's in the races. The motor will run right with any other 4 strk at the national. I have a 13-1 piston but you can get a 11-1 if you want. you are looking at a balpark price of around 1500 or more depending on what all you want done.
FDO #740-967-1078 ask for mike!

gnccer and oregonrider89 what gearing do you run?

if you are going to lose to a chick I am glad she was hot!!!!

I'm running stock gearing at the moment, but I like 15/37. The only problem is the 37 is aluminum and ws easily worn with sand riding. I'm going to try and grearing down in the rear. I'm gonna try a 40. It'll be quicker, but I have to see how much top end I'll lose.

I love my engine, but if you can get a well built, reliable 463 for $1500 bucks I'd recomend the 463.

GNCCer, What came with your 463 kit? Have you had any troubles? blown head gaskets, pulling studs, streching cam chains?
