Glamis400 and I built his 416 last night. We were both tired and nothing went smooth. First we forgot the O-ring at the base of the cylinder, then we ripped the base gasket. At that point I decided we were not going to let this project kick our arses. So we used hi temp silecone (sp) as the base gasket and put that sucker together. Even the hotcams stage two was a pain, the bearing would not fit. In the end we won:D He will be a happy man with the power gains with this set up. 416, JE 10.8:1, porting, hotcams2,valve job. Hang on, the power will be so much better!!

on the base...yes. Minimal heat and pressure down there.

is it better to use the gasket if its still intact, or is silicone the better route. and another thing, will the silicone compress more or be the same thinkness?

when you use silicon as the base gasket it will compress thinner than the oem gasket some people run silicon on the base in order to gain a little compression up top

The stock gasket is .020 thick and how do you know if the oil passage is totaly clear? I think that is a very bad idea!

I'm not sure I'm totally comfortable with the "gasket in a tube"

My father used to use it all the time when he fixed the truck, until one day it dawned on him that he was ALWAYS fixing the truck.

Yeah, it will work, but I'm not sure the longevity is there...:ermm:

Sorry I missed you on aim. and yes I am selling my 400ex. You have to be carefully not to block the oil passage, we were. Many engine builders don't use the base gasket in order to gain compression. I have done it both ways and never had a leak from the base gasket. If your carefully and apply it correctly you will have no problems. I should be putting all my aftermarket stuff up for sale within a week or two. Oh and to answer your question the Elka shocks are great.

If all I rode was sand I would get a Shee. But I ride all year. And in Cali you can't ride two strokes in the summer. So Pred it is. Good all around, and more power. And the big plus is riding in the desert water cooled is better.
