400ex tranny hard to shift

I've got a stock 00' 400ex that is hard to shift but only sometimes, when this happens i can't get it any higher that third gear. Then I'll stop and downshift, take off again and everything works fine, real smooth all the way through 5th. It's bugging the hell out of me. Has anyone had this?

i assume the clutch is working properly? try chaning the oil and see if that helps any.

the clutch is working properly and the oil is a week old. It's just odd because it doesn't happen all the time. Thanks for you help

3rd gear in mine is a little tough to get to once in a while too. :ermm:

Sounds to me like the transmission is going,better stop riding it now before it blows and cost you a whole motor.2nd gear is the weak spot in the tranny I would recommend changing the gears(2nd&3rd) every 2 years if you race it.Mine did the same thing that you decribed tore it apart and found pieces of 2nd gear binding the shift drum.:( This is not a difficult job to do yourself,if you have a manual and basic metric tools.
