what is the purpose of putting safety wire on your grips. they have the grooves and i was just wondering what the wire actually did

Is there a special tool you need to get it tight and sort of clamp it together? Seems like I read or heard this? How much is the tool?

Do you put saftey wire over or under the grips? Is it really worth using?

most grips have wire grooves in them. once you glue the grip to the bar....wire is placed in those grooves and twisted until tight...then the excess is trimmed off and the remaining twist i bend back into teh grip.

no need for the wires I think. My last set of Scotts tore in all three wire spots from them being too tight I guess. I think its kinda a waist of time but they do help a little

So what are the specifications of a good safety wire? Where can I get something cheap that will work good? I'd like to try this on my next set of grips. I tried glue, but it came loose in the heat when I was jumpin...

I use stainless steel aircraft safety wire, $12 for a 1# can. I have had the same can for four years, and an less than halfway through the can. I use saftey wire pliers for puttin it on, you can get the pliers for about twenty five bucks.

I got it... tomorrow I'm going to go to harbor freight tools (home of all the crappy chinese cheapo tools you can stuff into one store) and get some of those twisting pliers and some .030 stainless steel mig welding wire! I think that stuff should work perfectly, and it's like $15 bucks for a 2lb spool, which should last.. um.. until Honda comes out with a 300lb/100hp sport quad with grips that bioelectronically attach to your palms :p

For the stainless steel wire, try any place that deals with the aviation industry, I got mine while I was a functional test mechanic for Boeing. If you need I can get you a pic of the can....

Pappy

i go thru grips and bars too fats to worry bout stainless:p matter of fact...them pretty new chrome bars are in the trash can as we speak:ermm: but i will keep an eye out for it and get a can:D

06-10-2003, 03:55 PM
if ya cant get stainless,.. get in touch I can hook ya up..
the reason for stainless is primarily to avoid a serious infection if a wire ever pokes or cuts your hand ...nothing like nasty mud in a fresh cut in your hand

06-10-2003, 03:56 PM
just trying to help

Yea stainless is not necsisary, it just so happens to be what we used the most of. I just like this stuff because it doesn't tend to break as easy as farm grade wire. I only go through a set of grips every four or five months and am still on the same bars that were on the bike when I bought it :confused2
