Hey I was wonderin.. i can trade my 300 for a pretty good stock 1986 250R. Its in great condition for being a 86.

But I was wonderin what all needs to be done to these bikes maitnence wise.(being that they are 2 stroke) ..

Just what's the pros and cons of the 250r, and you think it will still be better than a yfz450?

Better than the yzf 450, prolly not....but you can get a nice 250R for half the price of the YZF. With the extra money you save by getting the 250R, you could build a YZF stomper!!!!

As far as maitanence, this is the R I bought......I had to replace the axle bearings ($60) steering stem bushings and bearings ($35) and I decided to have it freshly bored ($50) and new piston and rings($100)......and that brought it back to nearly perfect condition......well I did add a few extra's too!

You'd have to try one to really know...

The MX guys love them so much because they light and handle good. They have a good centre of gravity, the power to weight ratio is great, and they are fast.

Also you have tons of after market parts available for them.

The 250R is really the grandfather/king of sport quads. If you ask me all the racing quads are designed from the R.

with my r, i eneded up replacing almost everything on it. 3/4 in order to get it running well. lol. the rest i did because i ddin't want to rely on a few 17 year old parts.

250'rs are fast and easy to maintain. they are nimble in air, and handle like nothing else. though they are starting to be overthrown by the crf450s. the power those crfs put out is amazing. they can come out of a corner and over a double that any 2stroke bike couldsn't do because the crf picks up speed fast, and keep on going.

the only way to know, is to ride either of these machines.

but you wont beat 250r's power to weight ratio and low cg the power is great and resopnds well to mods u can break 35 hp with reeds pipe and airfilter 9now ur running with dales) new clylinder shaved head dyno jets tuned in u can kill almost all quads today and with a powervalve they are almost unstoppable and pull like a 4banger with the rev of a 2 stroke but check out www.rriders.com for more info about the r and maitinence..............;) :macho once u go r u wont be back................:eek2:

put a 265 PV on an R, it will put out the ponys of any CRF and still have that snap, plus some decent torque numbers, still not a 4stroke, but cheaper, lighter, and simpler to work on, plus a 250r is the easiest bike to find parts for, and if you break a part at the track, chances are you can borrow one from a fellow racer

good call.

well after i send out my shocks to get rebuilt by elka, i'm going to start to save my pennies to buy a 265pv. then again i just may wait, save a few more hundred and get the pv....

I don't even know what a Powervalve is:eek:

Thanks for the info though:D

il explain it to the best of my ability

on a PV motor, it alows you to run high compression for good bottom end (this explains good torque and such), then it slowly releases the comp and messes with some other stuff for the top end pull

wow, no chit

So basically it a pressure relief valve

In a two-stroke, the location of the intake and exhaust ports determine your valve timing, just like a camshaft. A port job on a two-stroke is just like putting in a high-performance camshaft.

You can buy a camshaft that will give you low-end torque, but the top end sucks. Or, you can buy a cam that will give you a screaming top end with tons of high-rpm power, but it sucks for anything in the low rpms. This is because of certain characteristics of mass-air flow inertia, and a bunch of technical jargon.

In a powervalve motor, the location of the top of the exhaust port will change with rpms, so that it sits real low at low rpms, giving you good compression and great low-end torque. If it stayed at this height, it would be too restrictive at high rpms, giving you lousy top-end performance. But in the PV motors, they exhaust port raises, which changes your pipe tuning characteristics, and gives you great top-end performance.

Imagine having variable valve timing on your fourstroke. That's basically what a powervalve does.

I rode a 250r that was custom worked on and was bored to a 265... and that thing could haul.... but..... im a four stroke person... so I got the Dale... which is prolly the closest 4 stroke to the 250r stockwise.... that 250r was a rush and it was awesome but Ive always had a four stroke but every once in a while im gonna go to my buddys to go ride his 265r and have some fun full throttle

my only experiance with 250rs was when my friends dad went away and i took his for a spin for like 3 minutes, it felt like a 400ex in 1st and partial second but then...lets just say zoom:devil:
