How much oil do you guys use in a hard days ride.(400ex).

In my 250EX i dont burn any.....But thats a little diff from a 400ex. But really in a hard days ride you shouldent be burning any oil, your bike shouldent burn oil really, unless something is starting to screw up....i dont know, i might not even know what iam talking about;)

my valve seals leak a little but it desont smoke after the intial start but i noticed ocassionaly it dopes burn small amounts of oil but with no smoke i dont know if its normal but mine runs great

Ya, it will burn some oil, but you shouldent have to be adding oil every ride.

i MAY have to add a little bit of oil once between servaces and I have a 300ex

I run Mobil 1 20w50 mororcycle oil in my 400ex and never have to add any oil between oil changes.Never had to add any useing the GN4 Honda iol at breakin either .

WEll then somethins screwed up pretty bad on my 400 i had to put 12 ounces in the stinkin thing after one ride!!! what should i do

your piston rings might have craped out.

or you could have a leak somewhere, like in the lines going to the engine or a crack in the oil tank.

If your useing that much oil you there has to be signs of where it's going. It's either burning it or leaking it put a clean piece of cardboard under the bike and see if it leaks out on there and that will give ya a clue to about the place it's leaking .Also if it's burning that much oil you should be able to see that much smoke coming out the exhaust . Iused to have a old XL250 that used about a quart a week and it smoked liked crazy i just used it for trail riding though well let us know what ya find out

see thats just it. its not leaking and its not smoking at all i dont know where its going

Are you checking the oil level properly?

Let it warm up for about 10 minutes. Let it rest for 5 minutes. then check, (on level ground of course!). If its not fully warmed up it will read low.

The only other place it could be going is when your riding it is leaking past a seal or the drain plug once the engine gets hot. Then once the engine cools down the leak stops might wanna check the drain plug and other places once the engine is warm.

Check that the needle valve is seating properly in the carb. if the float bowl is overflowing, the gas will run into the crankcase, dilute the oil, and will burn off as the engine warms up.
I have similar trouble on a vw powered sandrail, but that's because the fuel pump dumps gas right into the oil sump.
The oil will smell like gas too.
Other than that, it has to be leaking, or burning.
Are you checking the oil when the engine's warm? Or cold? I can't remember which it's supposed to be, I have to look it up every time.

im checking the oil as the manual tells me. thats it its goin to the doctor!

my 440 used tons of oil, untill i blew the piston apart on a drag, i use Royal Purple

im takin to a guy in ohio tonight. hes puttin a 440 in it maybe he'll find a problem. if he does ill tell him to fix it.
