about the only main difference is the 88 & 89s have alum swing arms..

I think the 88-89 swingarm is 1 inch longer than the 86-87 and the 88-89 a-arms are one inch further back than 86-87 or vice versa. Also 87-89 had a longer rod than the 86. Plastic is different and footpegs might have been in a different location in 88-89 but I am not sure on that one:ermm:

There are quite a few differences, if you want to get picky. Most are internal differences in the engine.

Frame-wise........... there are some relatively minor things that you can get around if you know what to do. The biggest thing is that people want to use a 88-89 swingarm on a 86-87 chassis, which can be done if you add rear lower motor mounts to your frame. You can't interchange front brake rotors, and the spindles are different. Other than that, its mostly insignificant differences that are pretty easy to get around.

dont worry about the year.. find one thats in the best condition possible.. and remember not to settle if you dont like it.. just walk away and find something else..

all parts are interchangable except for the swingarms which are with alittle mods to the frame(accually its the rear motor mount)

now lets see the differences

88-89 1 in. shorter swingarm
colors are different
89's came with 400ex rims and tires(radial tiers and silver rims instead of gold) might have been on the 88 also
the lightplacement was different.
the mounts for the footpegs are different from 86-87 (uses bolts directon the pegs) the 88-89 is different i forget exactly how they hook on.
the front bumper mounts on the 88-89 are all the way accross the front frame rails.
the stroke is longer on the 86-87 but you can use a 88-89 cylinder on the 86-87 motor with a spacer plate.
the porting in the motors is different. the internal gearing is defferent in the tranny. the 88-89 has better low end but the 86-87 is alittle faster top end(nothing that cant be fixed with diff. sprockets)

thats all i can think of for now guys plus i have to go so if i think of anything else ill let you know

I am sure somebody can put up way more than this.....but.....----Just to add a few things.........

--1985/86 ATC 250R had components that would bolt right into a 86-89 TRX frame,--------- the entire motor, the axle, axle carrier, hubs, rear brake rotor, rear caliper, carb, throttle assy and maybe some other stuff......

--88/89 swing arm was aluminum and was -1 inch from 86/87 steel swing arm

--88/89 has the same wheels as the 400EX,,,,,,,except were stamped with the year....my 88 wheels were stamped with the date......7-87 while my 2000 400ex wheels have the date 3-99. So if someone says the wheels on it are original...although physically the same,,,original they may not be

--According to macdizzy the cylinder after 86 was changed to make use of a +5mm connecting rod, and the in 87 cylinder has a bridged intake port, revised exhaust port timing, and a greater arc to the main transfers...,,and the 88/89 cylinders have improved arc to the rear transfer ports as well..........

--86/87 pegs bolted directly to the frame and the rear brake lever is between the right peg and the frame......88/89 pegs bolted to a tab that was welded to the frame and the rear brake lever is easily removed with out taking off the right peg as in earlier years...

...VIN number location for 86-87 is on a tab welded to the frame by the rear shock resivor mount,,,,,the 88/89 location is between the two frame rails on the cross bar of the front shock towers.......

--Headlight placement on the 86/87 was handle bar mounted,,,the 88/89 had the headlight in the nose piece and a deyed switch on the handle bars........all plastic is interchangeable between all years

--cylinder year will be stamped in the steel liner

--85-87 has a rear cradle for motor mounting and the swing arm will be spaced for this cradle,,,,,,88/89 has motor mounts in the frame and no spacing in the swing arm

--89 had a clutch update that utilized a needle bearing on the pressure plate to help clutch feel, however the 86 style clutch rod lifter is used

--for more mechanical differences get a CLYMER manual and it will define the differences in the years in many of the illustrations and will explaing them well
:D

86-86 had +1 swingarm (steel)
88-89 had +1 foward aarms
86 had short rod.
plastic is mostly the same...besides the 88-89 with had the hood w/ the light in it

you got some things messed up... but close enought

yes they do. there the same size... its just the 88-89 a-arm mountes are positioned one inch foward... most people think that 88-89 handle slightly beter, because of the +1 foward aarms and -1 swingarm... thats why most people who have 86-87 rs get +2+1 aarms and -1 swinger

Yeah, slight changes in frame, and some internal engine differences. Popular opinion is that the 88-89 is better, both in engine and frame/suspension.

However, with only slightly more money, you can do anything to the 86-87 that you can do with the 88-89.
