Or a z400, you will be a lot happier with a 400ex or a z400.

get a 400..dont care nothin for the z...or get ya a good 350x motor and sink about $1500 in that motor...it will run pretty good..the 350x is also an easy conversion on a 300ex

well you could get a nice port and polish around 150-300$, a new carb. will cost you from 150-300$ depending on which kind you get, then a new pipe will cost you about 150-400$ depending on what kind you want, now a aftermarket cam will cost you around a 100$ with a core exhange, high compression piston will be about 75-120$, a new gasket set 70-100$, bore would be about 30-60$ depending on how much they charge, you could also stroke your motor to which is expensive at around 500-600$, then you have labor on top of that which can be anywhere from 100-300$ or even more. going into the engine and moding it is not a cheap task.

it is deff. possible to make a 300ex as fast as a 400ex. I have the powerroll 329 kit, with a web cam, DG exhaust, oversized carb, port/polish work and larger valves. In a straight line i take the 400ex off the line, until im in 5th, and hes shifting into 5th. The i messed around with the gearing, i am currently running a 14 up front, 34 in the back with 18" tamers, and now its all over, b.c i can beat 400exs now, even though they only have a kn filter and slip on. I did the 400ex conversion, and have an extended axle, and now i can beat 400s in straight line drags, and also in the trails. I have about $3000 into my quad, not including buying it, so i would say get a 400ex, but it is possible with a lot of $.
