you might have put the piston in backwards. That happened to my buddy. The top of the piston should have an arrow or marking of some sort. If you put the piston in backwards, the spot where the individual rings come together, it can/will hit the exhaust port and BOOM, broken rings, scared piston and cylinder wall!!!!

at least yours was in one piece unlike mine....i had to go fishin for broken piston pieces in my tranny. still sucks though


my friend had that happen on his banshee....the ring caught the exhaust port and shattered.

I think that is what looks like happened i think the ring broke or something !!

Would you happen to be the guy at the District 15 HS race at Bedford (D.I.R.T.) on the Banshee that was running on one cylinder?

i build my own engines and i have never had any problems till now !!

I can understand that you are pretty ticked, but I have run Wisecos before in many rides and was pleased with them. Sorry dude!:ermm:

I remember something in the instructions for the Wiseco piston regarding the exhaust port. You are supposed to drill a series of small, vertical holes in the piston on the exhaust side to lubricate and cool the exhaust port bridge (I don't know if the Banshee has a bridge or not). If you don't, the bridge heats up, expands, and destroys your piston. Could that be the cause? I personally prefer to run cast pistons in a two stroke, but that's just from my experiences.

im not dissing on them its just that this is not the first time this has happened but the other time was my fault(circlip come out) but this time i dont know what the hell went wrong

Looks like you broke a ring. The piston could have been in backwards, the exhaust ports may not have been properly radiused, or the bore is egg-shaped allowing the ring to come too far out of the groove and snap off.

My buddys piston out of his 87 banshee looked identical to yours. i forgot what he said he did wrong when he rebuilt it but he was pretty ticked

so this isnt a problem with all of wiseco pistons? I just put one in my lakota, after sinking it(my fault..stupid ice :mad: )

My R just went through a wiseco piston also.... looks identical to that :mad:

Cant be sure form the info here so far but from the pics it looks like you may have possibly had too much clearence between the piston and cylinder. I have also seen that type of carnage on an overbore that removed the chamfer from the ports and after it heated up it just caught the rings and bam!

Then again it could be so many different things. You need to rethink all the back to the installation and figure all the tolerances or clearences etc an then start looking at jetting and any other obvious tales from the cylinder etc.
