IMO they are all good years. I like the look of the 88-89 with the light in the plastic! People have opinions on what handles better though:ermm:

There are little differances like a key and where the serial code# is. I cant think of much. I thing somthin inside the engine is differn. Maybe the stroke?? I cant remember. Iv heard "88 is the year to buy, but I dunno...

The '86 has a short rod which rev's faster than the long rod. They switched to a long rod in the later years to smooth out the powerband and increase durability. A bunch of folks prefer the '86 for the faster revs. There is also a clutch update for the '86 you can get but it's cheap like $80. I'd go for it if it's in good shape and what you want and forget about what year it is.

With a little money, you can do anything to an 86 that you can do with an 89. If you plan on heavy modifications, there's not much difference.

????????? You sure about that??????
I was told by several people that the fram was the same for the 86 & 87 then they moved the foot pegs for 88 & 89 but the rest of the frame stayed the same. There were many other changes, but as far as I know from what I've read and been told none of them actualy effected the frame.

theier are differences in the 86 /87...but they are minor
86 has a bulkier front motor mount ,87 has thin ones..
86 has an extra support under the motor mount also ..
87/87 both have the same swing arm mounting configuration .
of all the frames i have seen up close the the mmost damage has been done to 88/89's ..
just picked a 89 yesterday ...it has a crack in it :(

2R's
I didn't know about the differences that you listed for the 86 and 87. Nobody had ever told me about that, and I hadn't read about differences. I guess that I should have paid a little closer attention to small things like that when I was looking at R's. Also different engine mounts would explain why the rubber boot between the airbox and carb is too long on my R. I've tried both styles and both are too long. Now I'm going to buy a CR style intake to attempt to solve this problem.

ok, here goes..... mine is an 87, build date of 9/86- it has 86 motor mounts, resonator, long rod-87-89 style, 86 style counterbalancer gears and primary crank gears.......

mine was all original when i bought it- just goes to show you, with an 87, you never know, beacause they changed alot of stuff for those years (86/87) mine has some 86, and some 87 and up stuff.
