I raced a friend the other day with a 400ex. his is completely stock besides shaved fenders, and i have shaved fenders, white bros e series slipon with a 160main jet,and a k&n filter. i weigh about 195 and he weighs like 170. when we took off i got to top speed faster but he past me when we got to top speed.........:ermm: i am seriously thinking into investing into some motor mods like a hotcam stage2 and a ross high compression piston! i am getting sick of being beaten by z 400's and some stock 400ex's........anyone give some info i what i should do to get up to speed with everyone else? thanks

how bout if you figure out what's wrong with your bike first like try jetting it right that could make all the differance in the world cause a 160 mj is a huge *** jet for just a slip on

What he said. 160 is way fat.

Some of the slip-on pipes will shift the powerband lower, it happened on my girlfriend's quad. She put her pipe on, and the bottom end was great, but the top end suffered.

Do you both have the same gearing?

i agree. my dad had a stilleto pipe on his 400. and the low end power gain was crazy i never felt so much power from just a slip on the thing was loud as heck to. but it did feel like he lost some top

well just a little food for thought, i had a e-series slip-on back in the day and a k&n filter with the choke removed and never once loss to a stock z so i'm still leaning towards the jetting cause even if you live in alaska that still sounds to large

I agree with Ugly ^ a 160 sounds huge. My GF was running a 148. I'm just saying, if the jetting doesn't fix the problem, it may be just because the pipe shifted the powerband lower...

I agree, a 160 is too much. Step down to a 152 or 155 and try again.

his 160 is also a mikuni too. thats like a 140 something in k. i doubt its lean, but maybe. toy with the plates too in the pipe.

yup, 152 or 155 for slip-on. I agree with most here on this one.

The combo (cam & piston) in my signature only cost me about $300.00 and it easily beats piped Z400's.

If you havent done so, check your throttle cable. Make sure that the carb is opening up all the way when you apply full throttle.

a 160 main its not really that big if he is running a k&n jet or equiv. but if its a dyna or equiv it is large they have a different # to actual size comparison which is stupid in my opinoin but they do it anyway. i would check your plug and go from there

How can anyone suggest a jet size without knowing altitude, filter, air box mods?

Im runnin a 165 main and only have slip-on and K&N it seems to rev out ok but I havent done a plug check yet I agree with what was said before about different brand jets having different numbers for the same size jet I dont know what mine is but it would be nice to know, And Im at sea level!!
