I searched and did not find anything on this. Could someone tell me how much of a difference I would notice with a 14-tooth sprocket on a 440? I know top end would suffer but how much. We run XC and Millfield is the next race any help would be appreciated. Some GNCC's open up a bit so top end might be able to be used.

when I put my 14 on it felt like there was'nt a 5th gear:ermm: I think for moto-X it would work great but for anything else[trails, cross country etc..] I liked my 15 tooth alot better....

When I did it to mine, I probably lost ten MPH of top speed. A Mojave could keep up with me on a road. That was with a stock engine. I have tried a 39 tooth rear sprocked which is just a little lower than stock on my 440, and that was too low. I think that you need to go with stock or a higher combination.

Personally, for XC type riding with 20" rear tires I prefer the stock gearing (15/38). For big bore motors that have more low-end torque, 15/37 works well with 20" rears. To me 14/38 would be waaayyyy too low for 20" rear tires.

Below are some numbers from a gearing chart that I have. However, this will not tell you what your actual gear ratio is because it does not account for different size tires, but it does give a basis for comparison.
Teeth F/R - Ratio
15/36 - 2.40
15/38 (stock) - 2.53
15/40 - 2.67
14/36 - 2.57
14/38 - 2.71
14/40 - 2.86

my friend has the 14 and he ended up taking it off the first day he bought it. in a race where 4th and 5th gear was needed he was getting smoked. i would personally never buy one of these unless you can find a smaller sprocket than a 36 in the rear.

I aggree. I also went to a 39 tooth in the rear 15 tooth in the front and that was a little better. Went back to stock with the new 416 and now looking to go to a 36 or 37 tooth rear with 15 tooth up front.

With the stock engine I felt like it didn't have enough low end grunt for the hills around here. After I put in the Hot Cams, aftermarket pipe, and other add ons the 14 T felt like it was geared to low. I am now running 15/39 on stock engine and lovin it.

SideWinder makes custom sprockets. They're pricey, but worth every penny!! Go ahead spend the cash and it will probably be the last sprocket you buy. I have a 15/34 gear set up on my 440 and I absolutely love it. It's close to a 16/36 but not as high.:D

Yea but he would pull harder through the gears and should of easily been in front 1 thourgh 5 though eventually the other 400 would start to creep up because of the extra mile an hour. If he cant drive thats a different story. You speak as if the 14 tooth was gonna add or not sacrifice top end, he should of know that from the get go

the 14 just sucked for where we ride. the only way it helped out for our riding style was for coming out of a corner because you did not have to down shift as much as before. in a drag race though, 1st and 2nd was determined by how well we each got off the line. in third gear, the person with the 14 tooth was already passed and 4th and 5th was just not even worth mentioning. yes, we did know we would lose top end power but we lost more than we could ever expect. i know it wasn't the driver because my friend and i have the same bikes and he is a better driver and he had the 14 tooth on. however, my bike was all stock and he has a slip on, K&N, and jetted. when he had the 14tooth on, he was already passed in third gear by my stock bike. he then put the 15 back on and beat me through out the gears due to the fact that his bike has a few mods and mine was stock at the time. the 14 was not pulling harder through any gears besides out of a corner on a track.

I ride with a 14 tooth and yes the top end suffers a little but the bottom end is great..... I lugg it around the dunes constantly with ease.... I think I'm going back to a 15T but only after building the engine, until than the 14 tooth front is great...

My bike : 400ex stock gearing, K&N powerkit, no lid.
Friend bike : 400ex 14 tooth small sprocket, White bro slip on.
both 20" tires...
I have like 2-3 more KM/H on top end.. and on a drag we are pretty same but i'm usually in front...

Think about what gears you use the most. In GNCC you are only in 5th gear about 5% of the time. I run a 14 tooth and love it almost all of the time. The thing is like a rocket in the tight woods. There is usually only one spot each race that I wish I had another gear. That sacrifice is okay considering that I can go faster all of the rest of the time.

exactly, it's like the dunes, even when I'm hauling I'm usually barely in 4th, hardley ever get up to 5th unless I'm actually dragging on flat and not hills.... In the sand I'm usually in 3rd and 4th.......
