on a 400ex and for changing the main jet, you don't. if you have never done it before, it will probally be easier though. when changing the pilot and needle, you will be removing the carb.

Mian jet is a piece of cake to change without removing the carb....
17mm to remove float bowl plug, 6mm to remove jet.

You could probably change the pilot too w/o removing the carb but it's easier to unhook the boots and pull it out.

I can't remember but I think you can change the needle w/o removing the carb completely.
