I did that last fall. It took a lot of work to get teh R cleaned up to teh point of a 400 they are a lot older and you can expect them to need some work at first. Now I think its the est thing i ever did. I was starting to get depressed getting it to where I want it but now it's my own personal missle

man if its racing or mx your talking about just save some money and practice more. Basically your gonna be paying more for a quad than what it was new, most likely gonna have a ton of problems seeing the are 15+ years old and whos to say you'll even like 2 strokes. I'd stay w/ what you got.

Talking HP and speed, a 250R with just a pipe will KILL a modified 400EX. Its just a fact of life. My '88 250R, ported, LRD pipe, and 37mm carb puts out about 47hp, and its STONE reliable! To get a 400EX engine to put out anywhere close to this much power, you'll eventually tear up the bottom end or stick the rod through the cases.

However....... there are a lot of people who can go faster on a 400EX, or ANY 4-stroke, because it makes you ride smoother. If you get tired easily riding a two stroke you should, by all means, stay on a 4 stroke. If I were you, I'd find someone with a 250R similar to what you think you'd like, and ride it to see if you'd like it.

The way I look at it is your either a 2 or 4 stroke person. I prefer the 4 but 3 of my friends have R's and I'll tell ya one thing.......those things boogie:eek2: :eek2: My 400 is a little beefed up and I can beat them in a drag on dirt but if we were on pavement, they would eat me alive!!:(

I would say get the 400, Personally I like 4 strokes a lot better, but if you like the 2 strokes go for it:devil:

If you get a 250r & it has'nt been restored chances are you will be doing alot of work on it & to buy one in real good shape your going to spend alot of money & for like $3,500 you can pick up a nice 400ex.....but if you want that two stroke power band then get the 250r...

ben kbb says every year the r's value will go up. Its the most classic quad ever made. how can you beat the most widely known quad? its a 2-stroke and the banshee is going out of production too.So your telling me this (example) if they quit making diesel engines the value would go down? i highly doubt it! diesel would become more and more demand. This is the same sistuation with the quads. sure 4-strokes are the future but the minority is worth more ben. its a fact. the only time the 250r's value was down was the 3rd year after production. its still climbing and people want 250r's for there power and racability. sure 400's are great they might go up in vlaue but not as high as 250r's but ben you cant argue the fact the value has been climbing and what has hindred it? here we go again....................

I never said that the 400's will go up in value, I don't believe they will. Your theory that when something is no longer produced it actually becomes more valuable is flawed. Ford doesn't make the Pinto any longer and their value has steadily dropped to nothing. You are correct that people want 250r's for racing, heck I'd love to have a nice 250r - but as the sport quad market advances the racer's desire will lessen to spend considerable money on an old, worn out 250r, and then spend a great deal of money fixing it up. It is all about performance and economics. The reality of the situation is that the 250r is a great quad but for the money someone could buy a new 400ex, z400/kfx400, GasGas, Cannondale, or new Yamaha 450 quad and spend less money overall, and comeout with a more reliable and just as powerful racing quad. ;)

sure thats true but for someone like me thats had 2 strokes they wont want to ride 4-banger and a 250r is a 2 stroke so put 2+2 together lol people want them i had a guy drive up to my house and offer to buy my r right then with cash for 5k.............................with it in peices..................i dont think you could do that with any other quads..............;)

you can't rely on peoples oppions, you need to do what you want to. i sold my 300ex for a 250r a year ago...i've never had so much trouble with a quad, but now, it runs great. i wouldnt' trade it for anything. so what you need to do is figure out which way your leaning, keep the ex, or trade it..and go for it. its the only way you'll figure it out.

"My '88 250R, ported, LRD pipe, and 37mm carb puts out about 47hp"

roughly...how much hp do you think my86 r has? its got ct pipes, vforce reeds, lightly ported, and a k&n...any guestimates?

And how about 3-wheelers which haven't been made in 15 years and are worth nearly nothing, no matter what shape they are in?

everyone knew they were to dangerous to ride so no one wants them! now the future of quads c-dales why did they drop down in value? being they are the wave of the "future"

around here,we used to be able to buy and sell 86 250r's and 350x's for $1100,now you cant touch 1 for any less then $1500-$1800  :D Honda's 2stroke atv's do seem to go up in value,JMO

I will say Ive had a few problems w/ my R.......but thats b/c I got ripped-off,the dude b4 me was a dumb "jack-stick" and obviously couldnt wrench or maintain a quad if his life depended on it,....but I can wrench.....so now she's a ripper and its by far the best atv I've ever owned!!:D

if the R is in good shape....I'd jump on it,and if its not, find 1 that is,then jump on it...

My buddy has a 400ex w/ a few goodies,we swap quads sometimes when riding, and it always makes me happier I have an R,especially when I get back on mine and blow right past him haha, after riding the 400,my R feels much faster and more my style;),if low-maintainance is your thing,go w/ a 400ex I'd say, good luck w/ your decision:cool: :D
