I was wondering if the gearing combo on a 400ex at 14t front and 36 rear would be a little more low end or a little more top end than stock??

also would having to adjust the chain to make it tighter take away from the total wheelbase or length whatever of the bike??

thanks guys

it will give more top end. it wont affect wheelbase u just might need to tighten the chain more or take out a link in the chain but shouldnt effect wheelbase.

did it affect your low end at all?

you'll need to take a link out...atleast i had to

it sure is a nice set up if you go down to 18s, its like the gearing never changed at all and you can still hit around the same top speed, if you have 20"s on it the quad wont have as much acceleration but it will really get movin, i was suprised when i rode it w/ the 20s not to bad at all

15/36 with 18" tires is like 15/38 with 20" tires

it didnt effect my low end any at least not that i could tell if u were running 20 inch tire then it might but im runinng 18s and the stock gearing 15/38 is to low of a gear for 18s so i went to the 15/36 and bam perfect :)

I thought the 14/36 setup with 20 inch (stock tires) would be a tad lower than the stock 15/38 setup????? is this not the truth??

i was told taking away one tooth upfront you have to drop 3 in the back to compensate and the 36 is only dropping 2 in the rear from stock.. Thats why i thought the 14/36 setup would be a little lower than the stock setup??

You should have your sprocket Tuesday Jerry.

Those center caps, are they the solid kind, or they for the wheels with the lug holes in the cap?

I hope they dont have the lug holes.

Thanks, Mxbubs

im running 15/38 with 20 rear tires; you said that 15/36 with 18 rear tires are like stock, like what i have. if its the same, then why spend the money on 18's and another rear sprocket? help me understand spending the money if its the same. i have a 36 rear sprocket, i will be trying differant front sprockets with my 20 's.

18" rear tires are best for motocross, and I wanted to be able to go as fast as I use to so I bought the sproket also

The 14/36 is slightly lower than stock.

This chart might help, it is off Sidewinder's web site. The higher the number the lower the gearing and the lower the number the higher the gearing.

do they make something a little smaller than 36 rear in aluminum? by the way, 14/36 will give a LITTLE more lowend than 15/38.

yes they make as small as 33 tooth rear. comes in two pieces because the 33 tooth sprocket will not slide over the sprocket hub. the 33 still bolts to the sprocket hub using the same bolt pattern used to bolt the rear sprockets, but it also has "master links" on each side of the sprocket halves as backup (i guess). Anyway, they do make down to 33 rear for 400ex, ya just have to check around. I guy I know has one installed on his 508EX when he runs the drag-strip.
