i have a 1992 chevy P30 step van and lately it has been blowing some black smoke from the exhuast when idling. what can be the cause of this ? i changed the air filter and do regular oil changes. this usually happens when sitting at a red light idling in drive, it will idle smooth then start to get rough and black smoke will start to come out then ill give it gas and some more smoke will blow out and it will be fine for then...im stumped any help would be greatly appreciated ...

Sounds like your burning a little oil or something. Have you been to any district 34 races yet, I gotta look for you next time. I'm #450, with ugly clapped out red and black 400ex.

Sounds like your carb/tbi may be screwed up.... too much fuel might cause that. Usually oil is bluish in color....what happens if you rev it up when it is idling and blowing smoke? does it clear up or get worse?

QuadTrix6,

If it's only loading up rich on the bottom end when idling, check your IAC valve right behind the TPS. It might be stuck shut and not letting air in to help with the air/fuel mix at idle. You might get away with taking it out and cleaning it up good with some carb cleaner. One other thing to look at is the ECT sensor toward the front of the intake.

Sounds like you need to get a new set of gaskets and a top end change.

I gotta agree with VW. But that means you could be on your way to a clogged cataletic converter. Unless of course you already gutted or removed it.

i think vw is right
also airheadedduner is right but if it messes up, get a hacksaw and cut the b**** out if it isnt against local laws.

I think you got it a little mixed up. Chevy's blow out blue ovals from their exhaust pipe after they are consumed by the chevy.  ;)
