There are a couple of 250r's for sale in my area. They are 86's. Is there any down side to them as opposed to an '88 or an '89 for instance?

I'm not sure on the 87 model, but I believe the only difference on the 86 from the 88-89s is the 86 didn't come factory with a powervalve. And the headlight is in a different location.

I didn't think ANY of the 250r's came with a powervalve?!? :huh :(

The 86 and 87 has a 1" longer swingarm, which gives you a little less traction and power delivery to the ground. I think most people that race MX with an 86 or 87 get a shorter swingarm.

The 87, 88 and 89 have a longer connecting rod, which changes the power delivery, a little smoother powerband. You can put long rod on an 86, but then you either need to run an 87-89 cylinder, or an 86 cylinder with a spacer plate.

The 89 had a different clutch setup, a little bit better. Just like the rod, you can buy clutch upgrade kits that will convert an 86-88 to an 89 clutch.

MOST aftermarket companies sell stuff for the longer rod, but for a little extra money, you can make any engine work with any component.

86' also has an unbriged intake port. The tranny internally is also geared taller.

I actully like the 86-87' chassis better then the 88-89' but that is just my opinion. I think it flies better. The 88-89' does handle better though but it has more of a headshake problem then the 86-87' because the earier years had a longer swingarm which helps that a lot.(thats a hell of a run on sentence:eek: )

In my opinion the 86 is the best chassis. I have ridden both. The 88/89s remind me of a 400ex ride, while an 86 seems squattier. as for the motors, the 86 seems to be a quicker rever. It is hard to explain but if you ride them you will see. The 88/89 motors seem to have lots of power but it isn't the same as the 86
