what does everyone recommend for grade and type of oil for my 400? i need to add a little and im unsure what to add. thanks in advance, danny

theres a chart in the owners manual that comes w/ the quad. it shows what kind o oil to use with a tempurature. i think it has altitude too.

yeah i kind of figured that, however i bought the quad used, and no manual. the local honda shop is closed till jan5 so i was just trying to find out sooner.

If I were going to add a little, I would probably find a good grade of 10w40 or 10w30 oil. Since you are in Florida and it's not very cold there. I was using the Honda GN4 oil in my 300 and it was fine. When I got my 400, the GN4 just didn't stand up and would thin out. Resulting in a noisy valvetrain. I'm using Mobil1 now and really like it. There was a major oil discussion probably a month ago, check it out. Everyone put their 2 cents in on that.:D

Oh, by the way, since you don't have the manual. Crank the 400 and let it idle for about 5 mins. No revs! Shut it off and check the oil. You cannot read it any other way and get a good reading. On the oil change with a filter, 2 qts exactly.

I am going to run Castorl full synthetic oil for v- twin motorcycle engines and i heard good things about them..
I don't know about a bigger bore engine i hope i can synthetic

if you run in florida, try using 20-50 or 20-40 during the summer. around now, i am running 10-40 and am running fine. i live in arizona, so other that humidity, we are basicly the same.
