Yeah you.
You all know who im talking about.
Lazy asses thats all you are. Buying dem new quads. Thousands of dollars on the bike and thousands into mods.
Nothing is better then the ride of an older bike.
The kind of bike you find behind a barn that looked to be siezed up. clean the carb and first kick. Buy hey nothing beats passing a 400ex on my tecate.
I paid 3000 to fix and to buy it.
He paid a hell of alot more.

I'm just finishing up restoring my '88 Tecate. It's really an awesome machine and it flies. I understand what you're sayin' man. Vintage 2-stroke quads are pretty cool.

Its all personal preference about what quads are better. New or old. Like a 250r going against a 400ex. Just depends on what you like:ermm:

i agree that getting a old quad and fixing it up is fun. But i mean c'mon just because i don't own a 15 year old quad your calling me a lazy ***. Yeh i guess i am because i worked every weekend for almosst a year to buy a 400ex. I personally would rather my quad to be new than 15 years old where i have to spend thousands of dollars to fix it and then to rebuild it. I want a new quad that i can get on and start up. But an opnion is like a butt hole everyone has em.

At the beginning of this year my buddy told me that he was going to buy a new Z400 in a few months. So in January I picked up my Tecate-4 and started working on it. There was a lot more wrong then I thought and it took me about 4 months to get it going. In March he went to the Zook shop and bought his Z and rode it every day while I was inside trying to get mine running. I can't say that I didn't have fun working on it but at the time I was pretty mad. Here he was out having fun riding around while I was working just trying to get mine going.

After I got it running we went riding and I spent a lot of the time trying to work out the bugs and get it dialed in. I'm sure that I have quite a few more de-bugging rides left before she's right. The truth is that I didn't have almost $6K to dump into a brand new Z. So I had to sell some stuff and buy a fixer-upper. So I'd work on it, sell more stuff to get money and then buy more parts. I'm actually still in the process of selling/buying as I go. So it was really the only option for me at the time if I wanted to get riding again.

My friend with the Z said that he wishes that he had the time to do what I did. He spent a lot of his cash on the base Z and now has to wait to upgrade it. Where I was able to buy the upgraded parts because I needed to replace things and the used beat up quad didn't cost me much. Plus we both like to mess with mechanical things. There is a feeling of satisfaction accompanied with fixing up an older quad and making it rip again. Plus you gain a lot of knowledge by completely tearing down the quad and putting it back together. I definitely learned a lot from this project. Personally I would have been a little hesitant tearing down a brand new quad that I paid so much money for.

So Cauncey is 100% right that it's purely a matter of opinion. Nobody is better then the other. We all work hard for what we have. If I had the cash immediately available to me I would have definitely had many more options open. I might have bought a new KFX400 or a bad-a*s old 250R (race ready, of course!). We're all in this to have fun so let's just get along. No need to call each other names.

Well some old bike sare good to have (250r), and some arent. Some people just like finding parts easily, and not replacing as many of them.

I've been on both ends of this. Bought a couple junk lt250r's and fixed them up to race. Sold them last year when I bought the Cannondale. The dale is a fun bike but it's still stock do to not having the interest in racing it since my new purchase of the the GasGas 300. I'm a 2-stroke fan and that is why I when back to one. I'd done the buy someone elses problem and dump money into gettting it running and then constantly have to fix the little bugs. That's why I went the route with the new 2-stroke. Guess what I've been fighting the little bugs with the new machine the only difference is I'm doing it as R&D for the manufacture. Don't get the wrong idea I had to buy the quad and pay a discounted price on the parts, but I'm trying to help them fix the issues for the 04 models.

We all have are reasons for the machines we own (new or old) the quad we ride tells people own we are. Some like to tinker and work on there things and take pride in wrenching on them while others just like to ride and not have to do more than preventive matance (sp) like changing oil. Who really cares what others ride, what matters is that we are all having fun.

I second that. Costs more to fix one up than to buy a new one usually.

no different than any of the old "R"s out here. Aftermarket companies still make performance parts for them,http://www.fmfracing.com/ sweet pipes :)

heck, even Ricky Stator rebuilds stators and flywheels....(the MOST troublesome part on a T4) http://www.rickystator.com/pages/Tecate3_Stator.html

Also there are some fansites around for enthusiasts.... http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Dunes/6243/
http://www.tecateworld.com/

you can find guys with used parts too.

So.......I went out and got me a TECATE4!!!!!!!!!!!! Really, I did. Actually, I had been looking into getting a 2 stroke for fun anyway, and with the prices of the TRX250Rs still being so D A M N high,(86/87 are way less, but ya get what ya ay for) I came across this one. True story about its purchase.......I started out with a 86 ATC350X (3wheeler), stole the engine for my 300EX. Started looking for a donor trike for an engine for the 86 X chassis. Found one, but no $$$$$$$!!!! Vacation was on the way. Got interested in finding a CR500 engine to stuff into my 300EX chassis, and put BACK the 350X to stock and sell. Found one of Ebay, hooked up with the guy, but he traded it away for a 85 ATC350X. D A M N! Then he found out I had bought a basket case T4 some months ago, and wanted it. Traded EVEN up for the 350X. Now I had $530 into the T4, and sold some of the parts that came with it (spare T3 engine) for $200. Now, I got a Very good running 350X for $330 Took the VERY best pieces of the 2 350Xs I had now....remember, still have the 86 rolling chassis, less engine. I built One very nice 350X out of the 2. We kept in contact, nice guy, and he saw pics of the 350X finished and wanted it back..... ( The guy just put it up for auction on EBAY... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2947649874&category=1467&rd=1 )
Well, he had 2 super nice Tecate4s, so he offered me one of them, as a trade...EVEN UP AGAIN. Here it is... http://users.adelphia.net/~cinnamonlou/pics/t4new1.jpg Now, this may sound good, but gets a bit better. I buddy of mine went and bought the other 350X I had found, remember BEFORE vacation. It was kinda beat, so I sold him some of the decent parts left over from the rebuild of MY trike. Well, I got another $150 from him, and now The total invested in the T4 is a whopping $180.00 Not bad deal eh? To end this long drawn out story...I got a helluva deal, then 4 hrs after gettin the T4 home, I ran up on my brother's left rear wheel with my front right wheel and flipped us both. I thought he was going right, he went LEFT. Good thing we were ONLY going LESS than 10MPH. He got tossed to the right, landed on his elbow, I got tossed left, landed on my shoulder. Here are the pics of the aftermath.............My brother, broken elbow.
http://members.toast.net/rhueladams/uploadcrashpics/brokenarm2.jpg

..............Me, collarbone torn off A/C joint, outta commission for months
http://users.adelphia.net/~cinnamonlou/pics/t4sh2.jpg

HINT: Always wear a helmet, even riding slow...we both had ours on...both took a whack on the head this time..Oh ya, I am the one who ALWAYS b1tches at eveyone else for following too close.....practice what ya preach....It was 100% MY FAULT :(
