I am going to install a 42 pilot on my friends 400, we don't have a shop manual, is the pilot 2 1/4 turns out stock? thanks guys

yes 2 1/4 turns is stock

The pilot screw should screw all the way in until its seated snug,,,are you talkin about the air/fuel mixture screw??

rico, on my 250x in the manual it gives the number of turns out, not sure if the 250x has a a/f screw or not. I didn't get to taking out the carb yet, so I'll double check if the pilot screws in any before I remove it.

the pilot jet screws down snug...

the pilot screw should be ~2 turns out (mine was 1 1/2 from the factory)..
