Yes, I would love a new set guards.
IF at all possible if you could get them here by Friday that would be
amazing. I have no prob picking up the overnight charges. I have my quad
apart right now and I am going riding Saturday. I will be taking my
girlfriend with me and I really would like the added safety of the guards to
prevent her feet from getting sucked under by the tires.

My quad has the following mods:

ENGINE:
Bored to 416cc with a JE 10.8:1 piston with a XR400 gasket making it 11:1
Hotcams stage 2 cam
Medium port by ProFabATV.com
stock valves,springs,rockers
choke removed from carb
White Brothers E-Series exhaust Full system Pro Meg
Opened up airbox with K&N
White Brothers complete HD clutch kit

SUSPENSION:
Stock a-arms with Elka Economy Triple rate with SSD(self sagging device)XC
185lbs
Stock swingarm with rebuilt rear stock shock with Dual rate SSD XC 185lbs by
ELKA

FRAME:
PRM skidplate(frame) .125"
PRM skidplate(skidplate) .190"
AC racing rear brake master cylinder cover
Steel braided brake lines up front
stock rear rims
Maxxis 22x11x9 all trak
Pure Sports bandit xcr 23x7x10 front tires
ITP 190 +3+2 fronts
Magura Hydraulic clutch
Burgard +1 up +1 forward stem with Pro Tapers
PJR air scoops

I think that is everything
Let me know if you need anything else
I will most likely take them to a local welder and have them beefed up a
little as I do ride fairly aggressively. Thanks alot and I really appreciate
your time and effort. I will let others know of my positive dealings with
you and your products!

Thanks again,

John C Palmer

Hi John,
We have a conclusion now regarding your Heel Guard complaint.
If you would like, I would will send you a new pair in an effort to
recognize your efforts to communicate with us.

Since we have sold over 220 Heel Guards, yours is the first failure that we
have heard of. Our design intentionally minimizes weight while not
sacrificing strength when replacing original guards on stock quads as
confirmed from initial testing.

I am concerned that you had to modify (notch) the Heel Guards to fit your
quad due to other aftermarket add-ons or mods. (such as pipes and
wheels/tires) and that you will experience repeat failure because of these
mods. Your choice to accept a replacement set of Heel Guards comes with our
request for you to inform us of those modifications so that we can document
which aftermarket components will/wont fit properly with ours.

I hope this seems fair to you, as it is our desire to produce quality items,
and feedback like yours is crucial to meeting this goal.

Regards,
Gary Wilson

Any updates?
I am going riding this weekend and I guess I am gonna throw on the stock
guards in the mean time. I was curious how long it might take until you come
out with a beefier product(if this is even planned)?
I could probably get you the other guard this week. My friend picked it up
for me this past weekend. It looks the same except the tab ripped off closer
to the bottom of the guard.

I know it takes some time to develope new products but I ride alot and
wanted to know if I should go about making my own or should I expect to see
a new product from you folks anytime soon?

Thanks John P

Gary Wilson,

The plate should be arriving there shortly, via Airborne Express.
Package says (John P) next to the address. The tracking # is 60767268962.
This is the left guard. The tab that mounts to the frame broke off and that
is when the guard bent.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks John P

Please send them to:

Aero Tech Mfg.
Att: Gary Wilson
395 W. 1100 N.
North Salt Lake, Ut 84054

We are interested in reviewing the weld quality as well as the modifications
that you had to make for them to fit properly.
Also, could you tell us if the weld failed due to impact between the ground
and the heel guard, or if it failed without impact at all.
We want you to be assured that we value your effort to correspond with us.

Yes. I have one of the plates at home and the other is either up in the
mountains or just around the house some place. The cause of the damage is
that the weld snaps where it connects to the frame and hits the tire which
pulls it right under bending the rest of the plate.

Can you send me your address where to send it to.

Thanks John Palmer

John, I appreciate your feedback. I consider your negative experience as an
opportunity for us to evaluate our product in a real world setting.
If it possible, could you send the damaged heel guards to us, freight
collect?
We will get back to you with our findings.
Thank you,
Gary W.

To whom this may concern:
(forwarded from original email to RockyMountainATV.com were item was
purchased)

Thanks for getting back Debra! I am going to email them but I will give you
a heads up just so you folks have a idea of the product issues.

I purchased the heal guard/kick plates for my 400ex a couple months ago and
mounted them onto my quad ASAP. Initially I thought the plates were flimsy
but after mounting them up they didn't seem TOO bad. The plate is not as
deep as the stock plate but this is not that big of a deal, although I
prefer the deeper stock position. I had to drill a hole in my peg to mount
the out most screw. Not a big deal but no mounting hardware was supplied. A
bit of a let down since the plates are just bent aluminum and a few welds
for $100. The extension that mounts to the frame had to be ground down so it
would fit under the stock mounting bracket. I could of reversed the bracket
so it would fit but the bracket holds the fender away from the exhaust and
reversing the bracket would allow the plastic to touch the fender causing it
to melt. I also filed down all the edges of the plates as they were fairly
sharp and I did not want risk a cut if I wear to fall or slip.

The plates are longer(wider), farther back, and a little taller then the
stock plates(This is good). I really like the design but the quality is just
not there(Durability). The plate should be about a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch deeper
to allow the rider to lean back more in certain situations(stock dimensions
really). The metal is also way too thin and the welds are not complete. the
weld should be a continual bead instead of 1/2 inch segments. The design is
there but the materials and overall quality need to be bumped up a
notch.(maybe two versions, HD and reg?????)

I landed a table top and the weld snapped along the frame mount bracket
causing the plate to be sucked up by the rear tire and pulling it all the
way down to the ground and basically pivoting off the foot peg. The plate is
pretty much destroyed as it is thin enough as is and bending it back would
probably snap it. The other plate did the same thing when trail riding and
it gets snagged by the rear tire as soon as it breaks and just bends it
right down.

I don't believe you guys can do anything since the item is used, other than
maybe pull the item off your shelves. I have ordered from Rocky Mountain
before and I am impressed with your pricing/products/service. I let people
at the track know who I deal with and who to stay away from, Rocky Mountain
recvs good reviews from me !

Here are some pics of when they were mounted. I do not have pics of the
broken plates. The pics are older as I have changed my suspension to ELKA.
Its a 400ex(416cc cammed, ported......)

The stock plastic guards held up great for over 100hrs on the same terrain
and I feel that this item should have easily handled the same situations.

The plates were great, until they broke :(

Thanks John Palmer

Do I have to pay him when he gets here?
I will watch out for them.
I leave work at 2:30pm so I am just seeing this today. Do they take cash or
check? I have never done freight collect before.

I really appreciate all your help!

its great to see them doing this kind of things, and actively trying to address any problems they might have, at least you know they stand behind their product and want it to be the best.

sucks their sticking you with the freight charges, but at least you get the second set free, as you well should.

Thank you all for the input on the a-arms. I have found a replacement keeper ring for the king pins. I have to say i have had no more problems so far. I also want to say I think HOUSER makes great stuff I have no problems with him. I just wish he would sell replacement keepers, berrings ect. It just would be more simple. See ya all at the track!
