what all is involved in the 426 kit my bike is stoch except for a yosh slip on and my friend has a 440 with the xr cam rev box and wb-e-series slip on hes running 180 main and he gets me about a bike off the start and i run him down and pass him and get him by 5 bikes within the 1/8 mile drag so im not too sure i want a 440 i heard the 416 is faster on top and i want to know about the 426

12-30-2001, 10:06 AM
i think that your friends 440 has some problems

Depending on how much money you want to spend, you can make anything outrun most guys on a 440. They put the 440 kit in it and leave the stock carb on it with no cam and no valve job or port work. I have all that done to my 426 and I can smoke most of them out there. But I still say the rider has alot to do with it. Mo

u can pay anywhere from 300$ for just a piston and cam or u can spend up to 1500$ for the whole kit from like tc racing...

my kit is made up of
je 10.8:1 .40 bore piston (406)
tc mx grind cam
mod stock carb its ported and polished
mod stock pipe bc i didn't have enouf for a aftermarket one yet
he put in new rockers
and he did his full race porting

the total price was about 800$ or right around in there... but u have to remember ur gonna need a better filter probably differnt gear oil to break in with and more oil to change when broke in so its not exactly cheap i figured by the time my motor work was done i have about 950$ into it... thats a k&n filter, outerwears, outerwears air box cover, 16t sproket, 2 oil changes, 2 oil filters, and all the jets i have tried and played wit so its not exactly the cheapest thing on earth to do but man is it all worth it... hope this helps u out...

well basically a 426 kit involves you boring your stock cylinder .120 over and well it makes your sleeve pretty thin...i'd go 416 if i were you that way if you blow it then you stiull have a bore left... i had a 426 but shattered a sleeve in the middle of a moto and when i had it all re-done it cost me 800bux but i already had a white bros cam and it was already ported and stuff like that... i'm guessing if you started with a stcok motor you's end up with about $1200 with a good carb and everything... i'd reccommend TC racing he did mine for me and did an excellent job on it ... just be sure to have a re-laible shop do it that way you don't spend more $$$ in the end.....toby

51, I thought your 426 was very reliable? I don`t like hearing about how thin the stock sleeve will be. I wanted to do the 425 from TC some day. Now I`m a little worried about the sleeve being so thin. I might have to ask him if I could use one of his 416 Piston Kits with his XC Cam.

warriorman when i got it back from tom it was very reliable but when i first got it from my neighbor he had some shady guy do all the work to it ... thats where my problem came from ... when i got it back from tom he told me not to worry about it and i did but i never had anyproblems w/it so i gues it is reliable if you have it done right.... toby

That makes me feel good. I really want to do the 425. I trust Tom. I`m sure whatever he does is going to be good.

I want to get murcums 416 kit. Does that come with the piston? Should i get Xr cam or tom's cam? What is the price difference it would be i have about 260 to spend and i was going to get new front billet wheels.

The JE 416 Piston is what you would get from Marcum`s. I would buy a TC 416 Piston Kit and Cam if it was me. I think you would be happier with it. I know the TC 425 Piston Kit is $120 and the XC cam is $179. 400EX21 has the TC MX Cam. I think he said it costs $209. I`m not sure. I would save and do all the TC stuff. After getting his pipe, I won`t own any motor stuff if it doesn`t say TC Racing on it. That`s just how I feel.

At the ride this weekend I was riding with two guys on 400s. One had the 440 the other had the 416. They both had stock carbs and both had the HRC cam and they both had their porting and polishing done at the same place here locally. the 416 pulled the 440 every time. I dont know if it was the rider or what but the 416 was beatin everybody. the only one that beat him was a Raptor bored to the max. 416 is a BAD BOY!!

12-31-2001, 10:21 AM
I wouldn't wanna run a 425,,too thin I think. I know TC racing is the doctor of 4 strokes but your goin way to close on the bored cylinder I think..just my opinion,,but that's really pushin it..:huh

Dave400ex
12-31-2001, 10:29 AM
I think I`m going to ask TC about putting his 416 Piston Kit in with the XC Cam and see what he says. Most likely he will tell me to go with the 425 and not worry about the Sleeve being so thin.

12-31-2001, 08:54 PM
yea when i took mine to lost creek to be sent out he called tom while i was standing there and ask about his 416kit and he told me i wouldn't be happy coming off of the 426 with the power of the 416... he told me not to be worride anbd if i ahd any more problems w/sleeves to contact him... he is very nice to deal with and a very reliable guy.... toby

Now since you said that I like the 425 more. I keep hearing good and bad things about the 425. I know you liked yours. I guess when I do the motor work I`ll have to ask a lot of questions about the sleeve. I know he will tell me to do the 425, but it sounds like he stands behind his work very good. All I want is good reliability.

what od is the stock sleeve and what is the bore size of the 426?87mm?

51
01-01-2002, 06:59 PM
badass400ex... i could be wrong but i think my wiseco box said 88mm on it .... i can look tomorrow night to be sure and i am not sure about the stock bore maybe...86 or 85?.... toby

badass400ex
01-01-2002, 10:04 PM
so the piston bore is 88mm for a 426 i also need to know what the outside diameter is for the sleeve in a 400 i am trying to figure out how thin the walls would be because i think this is the kit i want just trying to get every bit of knolage i can before i do anything i have done quite extensive research on the 440 and to do it the way i want would be expensive because i wouldnt want the tapered sleeve

Dave400ex

Badass400ex, let me know what you end up doing. I would like to know all about your research.

Wheelie
01-02-2002, 10:33 AM
The stock bore size is 85mm.

IMHO, if reliability is an issue, a 416 would be a better choice than the 425. Boring a stock sleeve that far is a scary deal, not only that, 10cc's can't make that much difference in power output. On a good day, maybe 1/4-1/2hp, not worth worth the chance of sacrificing the reliability of the motor.

Once again, IMHO--In My Honest Opinion.

Jeremiah

You can do how ever much you want. You can spend however much you want, and you can make it faster than most anything.Heres Proof of that remark...

Ya you could have sweet quad with that much in frame accesories. Your quad is bad as hell the way it is but it would have too much power for me. When you want alot of power i guess you have to pay the price and for some things its worth it.

Maybe he is lucky like me!!!! I just turned 20 and I have been a freight forwarding agent since the age of 16. On the worst week I have had in a long time, which was last week because it was short due to the holiday, I made $1200. On a good week I will bring in about $3000. this is after tax and office rent. I guess you can say i got blessed. Everyone wonders how I am 20 and have a sweet big jacked up Dodge. My wife has a 02 Grand AM GT that has 18 in wheels supercharger etc etc etc. I have a huge camper trailer and a very nice house. We all have sweet quads, even my 4 year old little girl!! I just now got into sport ATV's. Before me and my family had 4x4's. I got tired of them and Im glad I decided to change my riding style. I decided to get me a 400EX. I have had it for about 1 month and I have put about $2500 in it so far. i am about to begin the motor work next week. Still trying to find out exactly what all to do to have the fastest EX around!!! Anyway I guess I need to shut up about my life story! Sorry!!

I wish I had a job like Chad. $3000 a week. Man, I could have a Lobo Front End with one Paycheck. Chad, what all have you done to your 400ex? What are you going to do to the Motor?

ChadEXer
01-03-2002, 10:05 AM
Well I have had it for 1 month. So far I have got:

New Factory Plastic(Have blue racing plastic of it for sale and old factory plastic also for sale)
Factory Effex Graphics kit and seat cover
Dura Blue Axle +4
Yoshimura full system
Renthal bars w\Fox Honda racing bar pad(matches graphics kit)
Pro Design Kill switch
AC Racing pro peg nerf bars
AC front bumper
AC swing arm skid
Turf Tamers on Douglas 190's(about to get new tires and wheels all the way around, Im getting a set for the strip and a set for the dunes
New nerf bars and a TC racing polished subframe with aluminum airbox and removeable grab bar is on order(had a little accident)
Front rims flipped but plan to get new A Arms
DID Chain
Right now this is all I have actually got. I plan to powdercoat my frame Yellow(when I get the motor work done) and get everything else chrome dipped
I still havent decided on the motor yet (416 or 440) i am going to get a new carb, clutch and probably everything else imaginable to make it go as fast as possible!!
I will probably go with the 440 and the HRC Cam(not sure though)
My mechanic has also looked into a 465 kit I think it was and he said hes not real sure about it.
I will be putting a new suspension and probably when I get through with it NOTHING will be stock
I will be able to get more accomplished when I get my wife back in here to work for me. She is 8 months pregnant and having a few problems so she isnt working with me at the time. When she gets back in here after my little boy is born I will have the time to look into all this and get it done Just so busy now!!
i am 20 and have a 4 year old little girl and a little boy on the way!! I started everything early,,married with kids and plenty of money at age 20!! Hard to believe huh
Anyway I will quite rambling on now
sorry

Well when I was 15 my mom worked for a trucking company as an agent. So I went to work for her doing sales for her. I gained a lot of customers for her but then I got offered a better job setting up exhibits all over the world which I did for 6 months and made hella money. When that season was over I had no job and went to work selling alarm sytems which I made about $1000-1500 a week. They went out of business. So I was thinking I was out of a job again when this new company(freight forwarding) called me up because someone in the business I know told them about how good I was at getting customers. So I went to work for them and got like 10 customers my first week. When you get a 40\60% split on freight bills that adds up very fast! like today I got 2 overdemensional tanks going from TX to AL. They pay $8500 a piece. I got my carrier to take them for $6000 a piece. So in all thats $5000 profit. I get 60% of that. I get 40% when someone else in the company covers my load. So right there I made $3000 in a couple of hours. I usually dont get loads paying that much but even the cheaper ones add up fast! It would be very hard to get into this business without any experience. the company will only hire people who have done this previously and already have customers. They bought me a brand new computer, phone lines, fax machine, and office space. They would only do this for someone who is going to make them money fast. Which Ive done. If you tried it with no experience you would have to buy all this yourself and you would go broke before you get paid without already having a customer base. Its an awesome job. I am very lucky!!!

Scott
01-03-2002, 11:59 AM
Isn't a 440 kit actually 432cc's? And that requires a different sleeve, right? So it sounds like a 425-426cc kit would be really pushing the envelope if that is the actual displacement.

400exBro

416 vs 400 stock which would have more low end torque???
I am wondering because i do ride some xc and want low end but i want the accleration for holeshot as well on the mx track

01-03-2002, 01:05 PM
A 416 is gonna beat a 400 from the very bottom up to the very top..The cam you choose could make the difference, the gearing, and possibly the choice of aftermarket pipe.

Dave400ex
01-03-2002, 01:59 PM
The 416 will have more Power every where. Scott made a very good point about the 425. That is going really thin on the stock sleeve. I think I might have to talk to TC again. I`ll just use one of his 416 Piston Kits and get the XC Cam.

Rico, when do you get yours back?

01-03-2002, 02:09 PM
Saturday morning..:D

But it's like 20 degrees right now,,wind chill around 5 so If it doesn't warm up I won't be riding..:( But heck I haven't rode in like 2 and a half months,,so whats a few more days..

How do you like the Xr cam??? the WB all round cam is the same as the xr 400 but they say it is ment to fit to the 400 so you don't have to do to many adjustments.
But other words i could save about 50$ and buy the xr cam right:?
thanks

P.S. - Look at my signature , what else could i use to make a good 416 but not spend over 2000$$?????

Around $15,000. We have owned a trucking company and construction company (road building etc.) I have been able to run excavators and cats since i was about 8. and I can drive truck now. So I drive truck when im needed and I plan on going to that tech college in arizona here pretty soon. I also run machinery quite a bit on jobs and make pretty good money with it. I still live in my parents house, so I dont have to pay for a house/apartment. I also work part time at the local honda/yamaha shop, so I get alot of my stuff at a discount :D (I revolve the rest of my schedule around that job :))

Oh yeah, I ordered Black +2 JD Performance a-arms, should go well with my black frame after I powdercoat it...:D

What type of oil do you run(brand name) in the winter i run Mouel 10w- 40 (sp i can't remember) and 20w-50 (castrol) in the summer time

That`s it for the Engine. A very cheap Engine setup that adds a lot of Power. Most of the guys on this site are doing that Motor Setup. I will do something close to it. I run 10w- 40 year round.
