Recently a friend got a new 03 400ex, after ridin his and then switching to mine mine is seeming a little down in the power department, something is not right.

Its not time for a rebuild it sitll runs like a champ and does not smoke at all, however the thing has trouble power wheelieing in 3rd gear while i can pull my friends up in 4th no clutch...

It seems like it doesnt have nearly as much torque as the new one.

Other then the usual such as clean the filter and new plug what else should be done/checked?

im no expert, but have you ajusted your valves?? i dont know if this will improve performance but its all i can think of.

are both machines stocks?

Some 400s work better than others depending on how they are broke in , believe me it makes a diffrence.
You might wanna try some air box and jetting mods to get the power up.

Power wheelie in 4th GEAR. Hey we are not talking about when he hits the nitrous bottle in 4th gear are we?

well there isnt any differences in the 99-03 400exs i dont think...maybe he has a filter and rejeted...that would make that kind of difference...and i can wheelie mine in 4th...:blah :macho

ok listen guyz...this has a lot to do with rider weight...i mean i only weigh 130 i dunno how much u guyz weigh but im 130 6' tall and that makes a lot of difference

I agree! Try adjusting your valves! Tight or loose valves make a big difference in performance!

yea i only weigh 110 but when my friend who can wheelie on his just fine gets on mine he tells me he struggles to get it up

could be jets or setup or lots of things

Both machines are bone stock other then the fact im running a k&n in mine. Ive adjusted the valves once mabey ill look at doing it again there not chattering louder then normal but its worth a shot.

Im not looking to start a flame war here but power wheelying in 4th is absolutely doable.

Any more replies are welcome

you also have to realize that every one of those motors isnt exactly the same. it would be impossible to build them like that. some just run better than others.when mine had a pipe, filter, and jetted right a bone stock 400 walked right away from it. and its not the rider in this case because I got on his bike and he got on mine and I walked away from him then. his bike was just faster.. Its all just luck. some are built better than others. and the wheelie in 4th gear thing. I just dont know about that. unless your going uphill, or through a field and you pull back off of a bump I cant see it happening. I can get mine up in third on flat throwin all my weight back. But whatever.. maybe its possible.

new clutches makes a world of difference :eek2:

he said wheelie in 4th, no clutch...!!!IMPOSSIBLE!!! unless your going up a steep asz hill

im telling you it will wheelie 4th gear on flat ground to a slight incline but however thats besides the point.

As another side note mine used to have the power his has. It seems like mine revs half as fast and the torque is just not there.

well that sux
