A battery will last a long time, as long as you have relatively low or stock compression. Once you bump up the compression, there is more of a strain on the battery, and you will sometimes have to upgrade to a battery with more cranking amps. After I did my motor work, my battery lasted about another 3 months before it died. I put in a new, stronger battery, and it has lasted another year of plenty of starting, and still works like when it was new.

the 2 biggest reasons i see for premature battery failure are::

1) the battery was activated improperly

2) the vehicle in which the battery is used ...isnt used enough. all batteries (except lithuim, nickle metal hydride and other new technology chemistry designs) loss 1% state of charge per day when not in use. if that battery has off key drains(lights on..computer devices etc) it can be up to a 10 % drain per day. the size of the batteries used in lawn and garden and atv ...bike...use dont lend themselves to sitting around...GO RIDE THE MOFO:devil or keep a battery tender on it:)

My '99 400EX still has the stock battery in it. It ran down once over the winter when I let it set for a while, but it charged right back up and has been working fine ever since. I know it's got to be nearing the end of its useful life though.

Also, my cousin bought a '99 400EX a few months after I got mine and his also has the stock battery in it. He went to a 440 kit over a year ago, which I was sure would kill his stock battery, but it's still working good enough to fire up his 440.

So far, I think the 300 and the 80's batteries lasted about 3 to 4 years before I had to replace them.
