Any of you have opinions on this.

looks like a good idea. If I had the $$ and the balls to tap into my motor I would do it.

That oil cooler looks a little smaller than the FST cooler, but it's cheaper! Hey dune surfer, I put an FST cooler on my 400 and it was real easy, I like mine..............

how much did your FST run you, is it basically the same setup. Do you have any pics of it.

Jchevy, I think I paid $135 or something like that, I at first didn't want to drill into the case or head but once you tear into it you see that it's not as bad as you think.........I would do it again, well worth it!

i have one of those coolers, yes it does seem small but it does seem to make a difference. i dont have a gauge or anything but it sure puts off a lot of heat i bet the thing is bullet proof too, seriously i bet you could stand on the thing and you wouldnt really hurt it ive also heard that it may make the engine less likely to ping on pump gas on higher compression motors by cooling the valve train

it looks perty cool and ive had so many people ask to see it or ask what are those lines for

the bad part was that i ruined my side cover and had to get another the head wasnt too hard, but if you dont stop and think real hard you will mess up the side cover, i will be more than willing to explain this further to anyone who pms me the guy who sells those is a member on here, he seemed perty good to deal with

Max, What is that temp guage reading on the dip stick with that cooler. Would be interesting to know.

I would also like to know if a stablizer will work with the cooler. Looks like if you could get the stablizer to work on the side of the cooler the screen could be cut to pop it through there. Any one tried it yet? Not sure I want to give up the stablizer

the hole on clutch side case is the tricky one to tap. I don't have a pic of the inside of it, but you have to tap down into the oil passage then put a small bearing that they provide into the oil passage that redirects the flow of oil. you will have to take the clucth side case of so you can line up the hole, you'll see what I mean when you look at it. you will also need a new side case gasket to finish the job..............the red arrow points to the oil passage that you tap into..

well it stays in the green, it depends how hot it is outside. last summer I rode on some pretty hot days and it seemed to stay pretty cool ( in the green) to bad that I didn't have the temp gauge before I put the cooler on to see how much of a temp difference that it made. I got the temp gauge the same time I got the cooler...........I'll check the temp next time I go riding, I have 5 more weeks till the doctor said I could ride again. I want to ride so BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the pics and stuff. This is really helping.

Does anyone know if you can just replace the stock cooler witha bigger one? Maybe relocate it to where the the aftermaket coolers go?

05-06-2003, 06:44 AM
I had looked into the bigger cooler idea and the main difference is getting the cooler oil to the head and cam etc and that is where the main advantage is found.

Do the fitting get tapped into the covers? If so how easy or hard was it to tap into the thin al cover?

Its looks like the oil inlet in the rocker cover should be somplace else. Wouldnt the oil jsut hit the timing gear and then drain down the cam chain tunnel into the case? seems like it would be better placed somewhere else on the rocker cover. But i guess that is the same place it gets pumped in stock.

i thought i did an excellent job on keeping the chips out, but i changed the oil to be safe, i later had the side cover off again and the honda guy told me it was a good idea to clean the screen on the bottom of the case if your ever in there, i didnt do as good a job with the chips as i thought, so i would also recomend running it for a while and taking off the side cover to clean the screen

i want those braided line covers

The cam bearing on that side is sealed, with the seal facing outward. As oil is pumped into the little reservoir that is created there, it is forced through the inside of the cam and out of the lubrication holes drilled in the cam. It's very important that the bearing with the seal be installed on the correct side, facing out, or you'll loose all of your oil pressure to the valvetrain.

would it be safer to bring the valve cover and side cover to a machine shop and have them drill and tap it?

the fst oil cooler works great but make sure that you secure the ballbearing with silicone or jb weld or you will find the ballbearing in your valve cover ond your oil will not have proper pressure or flow where it should . he did not have that in his directions at first he might now but it is important. but it workes great.

Thanks for the info guys! I've been looking at building my own kit with a extra stock cooler that I have, but I was unsure of where to tap in.

Thanks again for the great infomation!

the kit from ebay uses a setscrew to plug the oil passage

i bought one of those kits a couple months ago. its nice, and didnt take me very long to install. instructions were very easy to understand. and yes it uses a set screw that u install in the head where the oil comes up when stock. as for someone one doin this themselves, id say go for it. unless u dont have a drill and ur scared.

TURBO-530R

yes micky told me that i didnt have mine glued in whin it was in for repair and i told him that the directions didnt say to do that .
he checker and they didnt he put it on the warrior directions and not the 400 .
if you dont have it secured thrn i would fix it asap or it could be costly

I was also Thinking of making my own set up. Where exactly does the set screw go? Or if anyone could post a copy of the instructions on the installation process.

its called a "signature" but they use it to list every mod they have.

To do it, go to the top of this page and click on "User CP", then you want to click on "Edit Profile", then scroll down a ways till you see "Signature" with an empty box, type whatever you want in that box, then click "ok", or "apply" or whatever the button is at the bottom of that page

Would anyone be nice enough to post the directions of the kit. on how to install the set screw or the ball bearing, i am also making my own kit but am not sure where to locate the part that blocks the flow of oil. you could email me it at hhartke@ineffingham.com

thanks a bunch
