I plan on building my 400ex up to a 416. I already have a Wiseco 11:1 piston in there and i here ppl tell me they are crappy. Which out of the Ross and JE would you recommend for a 416 kit?

I've ran and weighed them both.

They are very similar except for the weight - the Ross will be about 5 grams lighter than stock, the JE will be about 20 grams heavier than stock - if you weigh with the wristpin, rings, circlips, etc.

The Wiseco is also heavier than stock, but I can't remember by how much (I've got my notes somewhere). The JE and Ross have a rounded dome, the Wiseco has a flat dome.

I wouldn't expect any big differences from changing the pistons unless you change bore size and/or compression.

My ross piston weighed 76 grams. If i remember it was 30-40 grams lighter than the je??? Not sure but i do remember it was alot less. The lighter piston will rev faster than a heaver one.I have no complaints about mine.

The Ross 87mm piston weighs approx 275-276 G by itself

my 11:1 wiseco was lighter than my OEM piston...

Hmm... The one I weighted (on a scale accurate to a tenth of a gram) wasn't - it was an 87mm "off the shelf" piston.

If memory serves me correctly, the Wiseco was actually a tad heavier than the JE, but used a tapered wrist pin, so overall it was close to the JE and maybe even a bit lighter.

I'd have to look at my notes to be sure though.

Can you get away with 93 octane pump gas with the 10.8:1 Ross? Can you get it in 10.5:1?

For the most part, yes... As long as you don't run anything that advances your ignition more than stock.

Iv'e got my motor with a engine builder right now he claims that the wiseco piston 89mm 11.2.1 is lighter by 40 grams .then the ross 89mm 11.2.1 that i got for him but I think that he is a big fan of wiseco....:huh maybe he gets deals on the wiseco just my guess.

Ask what the Wiseco weighs in at - my Ross 89mm tipped the scales at 302.4 grams.

Here are a few of my notes (these are bare pistons) & also note that I measured all these pistons myself on the same scale -
(lightest to heaviest)

Ross 87mm - 275.9g
Stock 85mm - 287.3g
JE 87mm - 291g
Wiseco 87mm - 296.5g
Ross 89mm - 302.4g

Next we look at overall (rings, wristpin, clips, piston) weight - again measured by me on the same scale.

Ross 87mm - 376.7g
Stock 85mm - 381.7g
JE 87mm - 400.1g
Wiseco 87mm - 395g
Ross 89mm* - 388g (approx - estimating ring weight)

The differences shown are mainly due to wristpin weight - for instance the Wiseco uses a tapered pin which is similar to stock, the Ross 89 that I weighed used one of their "Special Alloy" wrist pins that is very light weight.

All these pistons are the "off the shelf" variety with the exception of the Ross 89 which is a custom piston - although it should be approx the same weight as the off-the-shelf version.
