uh oh - an oil thread....

I'm using Mobil 1 now and so far so good. I have about 6 good rides on my current oil change and it still looks like new on the dip stick, the standard issue honda oil I had in there before that was black and breaking down after two hard rides.

The only "bad" thing about running synthetic is that once you start using it you cant change back, unless you clean the engine out because it leaves a coating on all the parts. Thats the only thing, by the way just make sure its for a wet clutch. I use 15w 40 in my 300, and I will be using 15w 50 or 20w 50 in my 400ex (synthetic, probaly mobil 1)... Same temperatures as you :D

Make sure you get the right type. You want the mobile 1 15-50 without additives. I think it's the bottle with the red cap, Right guys?

I dont believe Mobil1 makes a 15w50 with the API certification in which these additives are in.

I am using Shell Rotella T 15W 40 in my 300 and 250 EXs. It comes in gallon jugs for about $6. I ran it side by side once with GN-4 and the honda oil came out like water compared to the Rotella.

I would not use it in extreme cold winters.

I found info on Rotella on several sites including this quote.

"ROTELLA T SAE 15W-40 is a universal oil, meeting needs of both 4-stroke gasoline and diesel engines. It has credentials (API Service Categories SL and CI-4) for lubricating both kinds of engines.

It’s best to consult your owner’s manual for recommended oil quality. If your engine manufacturer recommends oil meeting any of these API Service Categories, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4, and/or SH, SJ, and SL, (or any eralier but obsolete categories) then ROTELLA T will lubricate and protect your engine and wet clutch.

ROTELLA T Multigrade does not contain friction modifiers, and it does not comply with all requirements of ILSAC GF-2 and GF-3 – and that’s good for motorcycle use. Friction modifiers can upset wet clutch operation. And the ILSAC requirements limit phosphorus content. Diesel engines and other engines with highly loaded valve trains need extra (compared to passenger car engines) extreme pressure wear protection, which is provided by an additive that contains phosphorus.

Other reasons to use ROTELLA T Multigrade are its ability to stay in viscosity grade, owing to a unique shear-stable viscosity index improver additive. And there’s no better oil for wear and deposit control in internal combustion engines. Last, you can purchase ROTELLA T just about anywhere heavy-duty oil is sold. "
