View Full Version : XR400 kickstart in a 400ex?

while thinking of the XR side cover swap to a EX I was thinking, could the XR kickstart stuff also be put into a EX? I havent had my side off so I dont know what the inside looks like.
anyone who has theirs apart please look to see if the areas where the parts would go are machined or not?
Nice to be able to have a backup starting solution.

I've been pondering the same question for some time now. For the ulimate power-weight ratio, a person could make the kick-start the primary. Removing the battery, starter, etc. would shave 15-20lbs off. Loss of luxury would be the only downfall.

yeah but the XR kicks BACKWARDS I believe, meaning the rear fenders have to be removed to start. making it ok for a backup but not practical for primary.

Yes it does kick back wards, and yes the parts will fit,but the kick starter would kit the Peb before you got a complete kick, maybe a 426F kicker or something could work, and you would probably need to get a xr400 head to add a comp release. But if it does work, man 15-20lb off would be saweet. Then the 400 would only weight 359 dry!

I think you guys are wasting your time , sure it saves weight but do any of you know how bad it is kicking over a large 4-stroke motor, or even amagine a 440kit.. even with a decompression switch.

I have attempted this. It will not work. The bike has a skinny frame for one. With the quad you would have to lenghten it to make it out far enough. Then the reason you have already noticed the kick backwards into the nefrs. The logistics of it are almost impossible. I did not say completely impossible because if a guy was sure enough of himself he could devise a way to put the kickstarter on kick it over and then remove it. Only thing is the obvious answer of When it dies and you arent near the kickstarter. And most high lift cams will not let you use a compression release which means your 11.5-1 and up pistons would break your legs trying to kick off quickly. Mo:(

I was more curious than anything, throwing out some ideas for the racers here. I had no intention of making it a primary for sure......... I had a 12.5 350X with no compression release and thats one reason why I wouldnt remove the electric start from mine for anything! a backup starter would be nice though.

Believe me, I think that if we could do it ,It would have been the first mod I would of done. Mo

What? 11:1 comp too much? A stock Mojave is 11:1 and so is a YZ426F,well the 426F is 12:1. So why would it be too much? Also how about if you use a kicker off a Banshee or something? there real short.

the 426f has a compression release button on the bars though, right? he means with an aftermarket cam and high compression it would be a pain in the leg to kick. But i dont know about the mojave...
