Ok here is what i have so far, i am going to build everything arround the stock 400 then mod it later after i get a car.

Here it is.
Used 400ex:$2,000-3500 maybe i can find one tht was wreck but salvagable for less

Yzf426 $??? where should i get one?
WB e2 silencer $300
Works headpipe $150
Hot Start System $90
13t front sprocket $12
Pro Design Alum. Banshee Radiator $450
Kick shaft assy $130
Shifter $30

It all comes to arround $5300-6800

I know im mising some stuff, like radiator hose and few other things that shouldnt be to much.

How do you fix the engine mounts on the stock 400 frame to fit a yzf? and where should i buy the motor?

Thanks

Pro Design Alum. Banshee Radiator $450

Ok and the point to that is? On a 400ex to YZF you should use a 250R radiator. Also i paid 470 for my custom made exhaust made exspeacially for this conversion, here is what i got now, tommarrow my custom made oil tank will be in

ok i will go with a 250r radiator, i still need soemwhere to get the mtor but i have all summer to hunt for parts. where should i mount the oil resivor? could i use the stock 400s and mount it onto the radiator some how, on the back side?

If not how much did your oil tank cost you, i have been thinking of different ways to mount the raditor is it a must to have gussets? or can i use the daul raditors from a dirt bike and then mount them in a different location? or y couldnt you mount the radiator behing the very front of the frame behind a screen to prevet damage just get longer pipes? thanks

exactly................the bike will cost u 3k alone if u get a good deal get a yzf400f for a better deal;) next buy used parts................... that will save you $$$ anything else just take ur time and shop man. I bet you could get one built with shocks (works or elkas) for like 10,500 but u could just build up your 400ex into a 416 or a 426 or even a 440 anmd run iwth the big dogs man............just rider and suspension really...............

whats wrong with 6 grand, buy a used 400ex for 2000-3500 if i can find a seprate 426, does yamaha sell them sepratly? if not then buy a used 400 and a used 426, there a couple in town for sale for 2600 thas 4600-6100 plus a few misc parts thats arround 6 grand

Yeah and since my dad is paying for the 400 i have now he wont let me mod the engine because it will void the warrenty.

why buy a used 400? why not just buy the frame and such? wouldn't that be cheaper? i dunno...oh well...if i did it i would build it from the frame up.

I WAS THINKIGN JUST BUY A FRAME, BUT I NEED A USED 400, BECAUSE BUILDING IT FROM THE FRAME UP WOULD BE BS YOU NO HOW MANY SEPARATE PARTS YOU HAVE TO BUY? BOLTS AND EVERYTHING.

i AM GOIGN TO WORK ALL THIS SUMMER AND SEE HOW MUCH CASH I HAVE THIS WINTER DEPENDING ON THAT I MAY JUST REBUILD THE SUSPENSION AND SEE IF I CAN DO SOME ENGIEN WORK ON MY CURRENT 400 OR MAYBE DO THE BUILD UP.

atleast you know exactly whats on your quad......if i ahd the time to do it...thats prolly how my next project will start....i will most likely build a quad unless honda offers a new high performance quad by then...but if i build i can keep my 416 top ride until its done..then whens its done ill have 2 quads:D

You might be able to get a 426 motor in the frame for 6k, but its still going to have stock suspension, wheels, tires, axle. So you add in 2k for suspension, 400$ on wheels (really good deal), some nice tires for a little over 100$, and an axle for 300$. Now your up to 9k not counting all the little stuff your going to need to make it all work.

Rather than spending 3 grand on a used 400, just get a lonestar arens or houser frame already made for a yz. They are about 2,300 and then you could get some a arms w/ the 700 u have left.
Stock 400ex frames are junk for this setup anyways. My 400 frame is breakin all over the place due to the yz motor.

Martin Blair

Yeah but then i need shocks arms swingarm, and everythign else

I figured the whole engine setup is going to run about 3000 for exhaust radiator and engine.

that leave me with 3000 for the chassis if i spend 2300 on a frame i cant spend much more on anythign else.

I can buy a used 400 for 2200 or so on ebay, one that is torn up y not do that? get the frame gusseted y would it break?

well first off im goign to have to do something with my parents i thoguth i had there support they wouldnt py for anything but now all my dad does is yell that i cant do this.

Martin Blair
05-05-2003, 09:34 AM
well i got everythign planed otu it should run about 6 grand, i got a job and am getting money for mowing some lawns, my birthday and im building a porch for a lady next door. I m goign to buy the used 400ex first i think i can find a good one for arround 2500-3000 then sell the engine, exhaust, carb, lights, controls exctera and get about 1500 back then save up some more and buy the motor and get the frame gusseted then just time to put her together. Should i buy i whole used yzf426? i can find them in good condition arround here for 2600 or should i buy motor and everything separate?

05-05-2003, 09:38 AM
just dont do it unless you plan on having all top of the line stuff, chassis, a-arms, suspension....i suggest jsut getting a used 400ex then getting a real nice suspension setup and you will be satisfied with that

Martin Blair
05-05-2003, 11:04 AM
yeah, i was talkign to my dad again and we are just going to buy a 250r and we are going to make is a joint project bike, deck it out as a xc machine istead of doing the conversion.

Paul400ex2002
05-05-2003, 11:30 AM
well if i do it, it'll be on a brand spanking new stock 400ex frame, gonna fully gusset it, and get the motor in, radiator, etc, then swap my a-arms and shocks off my 400ex, then ride the yz until i can buy some new stuff for my 400ex...

Martin Blair
05-05-2003, 12:21 PM
im goign to do the r as a race bike and keep my 400 i ahve now as a fun trail bike.
