View Full Version : Hinson Racing clutch cover or XR400 clutch cover on a 400ex?

I saw Hinson racing makes a quick change clutch cover kit where the side cover is actually a 2 piece design. I got to looking and saw the XR used the same design. I also noticed the Hinson cover has a aluminum plug pressed in the kickstart hole so I assume they are using XR side covers also despite making it sound like they machine down a EX cover. but do they do anything special to the XR cover to get it to fit?
will a std XR cover fit a EX?
I wonder why honda didnt make the 400ex clutch cover like the one on a XR400?

while it looks lke we need to do an investigation cause if all hinson does is put there clutch cover on a xr side then we can all be saving money. I am almost sure that the xr and ex use the same motor except the ex is electric start and is detuned. If the hinson is a xr one then all you'd have to do is buy the hinson side and plug the kick started hole

After comparing the 2 covers in parts diagrams, they have the same gasket # but they do have different clutch cable brackets(hinson includes one with its case also) the hinson pic shows the XR cable bracket and the raised boss it bolts 2 that is not on the EX cover, so unless they welded a raised area to the EX cover and such it IS a XR cover with the kickstart hole plugged and has their fancy cover bolted on it.

Thats one great markup too, over 100$ per unit
if thats what Hinson does. I think im going to to buy a used XR side if i can find one. then i wonder if we can get some of out memebers to CNC a Cover we could just copy a Hinson one sounds like a cheap replacement.

well if they use the same gasket i'm going with there the same. some one find a number for hinson and i'll call them and demand to know the truth

i was just lookin at nacs and they have the covers for sale well on a 250r and banshee u have to send in ur stock cover or pay a charge just like cams well on the 400ex u don't i bet this is bc they just buy a xr400s stock and put their cover on it and block off the kicker i bet it can be done....

I would like to have a clutch cover with my name engraved on it or something. Can it be done?

to machine out a cover like the fancy Hinson red one would cost more than $30 I bet, it has the clutch arm going thru it and would require lots of hours per unit to do all that machining.
IF we could get somone to do it though, it would be cool to have EXRiders.com on the cover!

why not just use the 'plain' xr cover instead of the fancy machined one..?

the whole point is to make working on the clutch easier right.. :D

the only trick part would be finding a correct sized plug for the kickstart whole.. might be able to use a metric freeze plug off one of the imports...

the top pic in this link shows a xr400 kickstart hole block off with something. the xr400 in that site has a 400ex electric start.
