View Full Version : loud ticking noise when i start it

on my 400 when i first start it there is a loud ticking noise coming from the bottom end but it only does it when i first start it and let it idle for a minute

The 400 engine is equiped with kind of a centrifiguel clutch on the camshaft that operates a decompressor when you start the engine. this prevents strain on the starter motor. if the engine spins too slowly after starting it will continue to operate the decompressor system. if you adjust the idle a bit higher, it will quit. mine does the same thing, it's not a problem.

i was gonna say the exact same thing. the decompression thingy is on the right exhaust valve.
