Hey guys i need some help understanding sprocket mods so i can decide what i wanna do to my 400. I know the stock front sprocket is a 15 tooth and if i change it to a 14 tooth i will get better acceleration but i will lose some top speed. However what i dont understand is what all changing the rear sprocket will do. What is the tooth count stock on a 400ex? What will upping the tooth count or lowering the tooth count on the rear do? What will it do in combination with changing the front sprocket to a 14 tooth?

Sorry so many questions i just am trying to understand it all. Im new to these forums and in my search for info on the 400 im glad i found this website cuz it sounds like u guys know alot about our fourwheelers.

Thanks yall :D

the rear is the opposite the front, the smaller the rear the more top end, the bigger the rear the better low end

stock rear sprocket on a 400ex is 38....droping it to a 37 or 36 will ad more top end...adding teeth like a 39 or 40 will give you more bottom

so if you put a smaller front sprocket on and a smaller rear sprocket on you would just be defeating the purpose cuz they would cancel out RIGHT? not that im gonna do that i just wanna make sure i understand it.

So if i wanted alot of low end torque and acceleration i would want to put a smaller front sprocket and larger rear is that right? How much is too much? just wanting to get some of yalls opinions.

Thanks for the help on this :D

Firt off Welcome 1996svt :D I am sure you will find this site informative. Beware though it is addicting.

It all kind of trial and error with gearing. Depends on the type of riding you do. If your looking for more low end / acceleration try a 14 tooth. I felt i lost to much top end with a 14. I was looking for sixth gear. I changed back to a 15 tooth and went up one on the rear (ie 39 tooth) It is a good in between. I just got my bike built with a 416 and cam and i am going to look at going back to stock or even a 37 or 36 tooth in the rear. If you do allot of trails and woods riding I think you might like a 15 39 combo. Still gives a good punch off the line but you don't loose as much top end as a 14 / 38 combo.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help yall :D I think i understand now and i have a few things to think about to decide what i wanna do.

I do alot of trial riding and out in fields but i also race on closed courses. I am looking for more take off and acceleration out of the turns BUT LOL even with the stock 15 tooth front sprocket I am already looking for 6th gear JD400exrider. But thanks for all the info it has been helpful.

the 14 tooth is probly the easiest and fastest way to see a difference in your ex...don't overquestion this mod...try it!

Sunstar. bottom line. I've seen guys thrash sidewinder sprockets that cost twice as much. These guys can also barely get a sunstar to shuck a tooth. I'm gonna use a renthat steel front sprocket and see how it holds up though.

I'm sure Honda put alittle thought into what sprocket belongs on the quad. I feel that the stock is good for a fairly stock motor and average weight rider. But if you want a little more top end try a 36 tooth rear. Its not as high as as a 14 front...

I just ordered the sunstar front sprocket for my 400 with the 14 teeth.
