You can put any motor in any frame...just a matter of how much customizing you are willing to do. The CR500 motor will not drop right in a 250R/400EX frame. Even if you do get that motor in there...after changing several mounts...etc....its gonna vibrate your arms off....

This is true anyone who has put a cr500 motor a frame has vibrated it so bad that it cracks all the welds. Sooner or later it will snap the frame.

I guess the motor doesnt have a counter-balance on it?

Can someone explain to me why a motor will be fine in a bike frame but when you throw it in a quad frame it wants to eat welds? Do the engines on the bikes not have to be counter-balanced. Im not very mechanically inclined and do not find myself in the mechanical part of the forum much. :ermm:

i was wondering the same thing about why it will vibrate and eat welds in a quad frame but not a bike frame..i think if you do it right(re-inforce stock frame or get an aftermarket frame) it whould be fine

my best guess is, dirtbike frames are alot smaller than fourwheeler frames, and if you know anything about leverage, the longer the piece of metal, the more its going to shake. just my guess

Here is one I scanned in from February 1991 DirtWheels. It was built by JP racing. I think JP was bought out or changed their name to Lonestar.

Sorry bout the chopped pic, I just scanned it from a two page spread.

it can be done but u cant just throw it in a ex frame and no matter what it will vibrate

Here is a KX500 with Independent Rear Suspension.
I scanned this one from the May 1993 3&4 Wheel Action.

As you can see, these conversions have been done before. They must not have worked very well, otherwise you would think the Manufacturer would be all over this Idea.

I believe the 'Zilla has a counterbalancer. Regardless, it tears itself apart simply because it is a Suzuki!

just think about it. A dirt bike can vibrate from side to side cuz there is only two wheels on the ground so it can lean and it just rolls off of it, the whole thing shakes as one, it all moves together. with a quad there is four tires on the ground and it cant move side to side, ya know what i mean, so when the motor vibrates there is nowhere for it to go and the frame takes the damage. Its kinda hard to explain...oh well:ermm:

i think you did a pretty good job of explaining it...

You need to have a pipe custom made, you have to gusset your frame you have to make new mounts, you have to make a new air intake setup....all of this cost's money and is just generally a pain in the ***. After you've put all that money into it you have a machine that will vibrate. Unless you have the flywheel weighted and the rotating assembly balanced...this will help quite bit but still vibrate more then a normal quad. After all that time and money you realize, wow this is really fast now you need an extended swingarm to use this new found power. Now you think hmm this is fast as hell but it sucks cause it numbs your arms and legs...then you will try and sell it and never get your money back out of it. So the way I look at it it's not worth it, but if you have time and money to piss into the wind, go for it.

Luckily I stopped partway through my KX500/250R .... All I needed was the pipe....but I really didn't want to get screwed when it was time to sell it, and that motor was becoming a rarity so eventually parts will be a pain in the *** to get so I **** canned that idea.

04-30-2003, 03:35 PM
urrgh u guys know this side to side crap isnt why quad vibrates more right?.....bikes forks absorb the vibration...quad dont have forks

04-30-2003, 03:37 PM
You mean the piston doesn't move side to side >? OMG  lol...i read that too but didn't want to say anything....

It has to do w/ the gyro effect and the width of the frame of a quad and its "4" corner load, bike frames are narrower and the balanced harmonics are different.....thats why atv motors are counter-balanced

not sure about the 4st bike motors, seems to work a little better for 4st conversions but they still vibrate a little bit, just not like a cr500

I work with a guy that has all the parts to do it. The quad is in peices and is trying to sell the whole thing for $2000. He said everything is there. I guess they have some pretty awesome power from what he told me.
