ok i got a 36 tooth rear sprocket for my 400ex anticipating my new 18" holeshot mx's next week, the question is, will i have to get a new chain or will i just be able to put the sprocket on?

I can't say for sure in your situation, but when I put mine on, I had to cut a few links out of my chain to get the right tension. My chain was stretched though, so if you have a newer chain, it might be alright. Mine was real close, but a little too loose. You will really like that setup; little more top end while retaining most of your bottom end power.
