Over the winter I had my motor upgraded to a 416 + Sparks race cam + Sparks X-6 full pipe + port job, etc. I was amazed at the difference over my mostly stock motor.

Well, I finally got the funds to add an FCR 39mm carb last weekend. All I can say is WOW! This thing frickin' rips. I'm totally impressed with this machine. That new carb just makes it get going really quick. The stroke on the throttle is shorter than stock, so it's real (too) easy to go from idle to full throttle.

There's only one thing that bothers me. I'm afraid my tires aren't going to last long :devil

My quad is all stock and I rode RytM1's quad this past weekend. He has a 416 plus the FCR. Man what a difference. We were on some soft dirt and I was spining the tires in almost all the gears.

Those mods are next on my list.

Did you keep the thumb throttle or switch to a twist throttle? If you kept the thumb throttle, did it become stiffer/harder to push the throttle?

The one I rode was thumb throttle. I didn't notice any difference between mine and his, but I only rode it for like 5 minutes. I've never had any problems with the stock one being stiff though either.

I kept the thumb and it is easier than my stock one was, but I still had my original cable (2 years old).

Doibugu2 - you're not kidding. I felt like I was spinning like a 2-stroke :D

It's crazy how much the carb perks up the Honda huh :D

As for the pull being stiffer, it shouldn't be. Make sure you are using the correct cable, as the stock cable will not work without modification on the FCR carb

Don't you get a special cable made to fit the FCR and thumb throttle?

Ain't it great.....:devil

Dave400ex -

You can either have the end on the stock cable modified or, yes, you need a new cable to fit the carb. The stock cable will not work as is.

I got one more question. Do you have to mess with Jetting all the time or can it be set for pretty much year round? My stock carb now is setup so it will work great if it's 20 degrees or 100 degrees. I've never jetted before and don't know what I am doing and like not having to mess with my Carb...

I would deffinatly have to agree the carb makes a huge difference along with the sparks pipe.. the tires like to spin:devil I am also glad that they came up with the FCR air screw also :)

I prefer twist throttles to begin with so the push/pull twist is smooth as butter. I was wondering if anyone noticed the clearance from the tank to the carb? I put a rubber block under my tank to lift it a bit so the tank wouldn't hit the top of the carb incase I land with my jewels on the tank or front of seat. Anyone else do this or am I worrying unnecessarily? :p

Smoker, I didn't notice any clearance problems with mine. And to back-up what the rest of have said, the results of the FCR/416 combo were well worth the money.

Dave400ex - Once you get it dialed in you really shouldn't have to mess with jetting unless you change riding areas with a big altitude difference or if you do more mods. I'm sure if you wanted "peak" performance you could change drop a jet when it was 20 degrees and jump a jet when it's 100 degrees but it certainly shouldn't be necessary. That's one of the best things about Thumpers..once they are dialed in, just keep riding it hard :devil :macho :D

You guys with the FCR. Did you loose any low end thump with the fcr 39. I have a 416, HRC cam which should be back together in a few days. I ride allot of woods, hill climbing although do some wide open fire roads. Is the fcr 39 going to be better than a stock carb mod lets say from curtis sparks.

Rytm1,
Do you know how to adjust the fcr very well? I have one I bought used waiting to be installed.

Where did you and Doug go riding? I need to meet up with you guys next time!

From what I notice they run better everywhere in the powerband. Increased throttle response was very noticeable, as far as overall gains I couln't tell you since I bored, ported, and added valve springs and a cam at the same time. I added a Trinity exhaust later and I love riding my bike, it runs like a 400 should in the first place. :p

Gambler, we went up to Fox Valley Off-Road in Ottawa. As for the FCR, this was the first time I had it out. I bought mine used also, and it seems like what ever jets/needle were in there are pretty close (didn't notice any stumbling). The only thing I did mess around with a couple times, was the fuel screw. It runs great, but I'm sure that it still has some room to be dialed in a little better. One of these days I'll pull the plug on it and get a reading. I just wanted to get out and ride last weekend, didn't feel like spending a lot of time troubleshooting.

How was Ottawa? Are you planning on returning anytime soon? Count me in if you do. I ordered the fuel screw from C&D for adusting so hopefully I can get mine adusted right. Do you know what main jet you're running and where your clip is?
I just need to find the time to get it installed

Ottawa was alright. A little muddy in places, but that was to be expected. I don't know when the next time is that I'll be heading up there. So far, it looks like a few of us are going to try heading up to Silver Lake State Park the last weekend in May. The guy I bought it from had a 180 main, 52 pilot, and the clip was in the middle position (not sure what needle number right now). It seems to run pretty good, but one of these days I have to pick up a few pilots. I already have mains that I can switch out from the stock carb.

I went from a stock carb to an FCR on my 416 a couple years ago - I didn't lose any bottom end, I actually gained.

Yes, the FCR will be better than any "stock carb mod" - safer too. Carb boring is bad about causing stuck throttles. Many engine builders won't even do the mod for safety reasons.

I think he meant that you could've turned around and sold it for more than you paid for it, but dang that's a good deal.

True, if I wasn't in the market for one for myself. The money I would have made off the used one, I would have had to dump into the new one.
