400ex Vs Z400 On A Motocross Track

Ok here's the deal,

A freind went to a atv motocross race and comes back to work and tells me "You better sell that Z, It cant keep up to the 400ex's"

Apparently, there were two z400's that lost to four 400ex's in a amateur class.

He thinks the stock 400ex handles better than a stock z400.

(I call him Jim Fondahonda)


Does anyone here have experence on both machines ?

in stock form i think the 400ex will out handle the Z on a mx track with riders being of equal skill...and yes i have riddin both.

Z400---LIST OF FAULTS:

1. Broken frame above shock mounts
2. Broken frame mount for plastics on left front side
3. Broken wheel stud when changing tires
4. Broken throttle aduster attached to throttle housing on carb.
5. Broken air/fuel screw
6. Bent rear axle
7. Bent frame
8. Broken tail light
9. Broken shock dust cover on front left shock

NOT BAD FOR MY FIRST ATV AND LESS THAN ONE YEAR RIDING!!!! SUZUKI HAD LEFT A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH AND I'LL NEVER OWN ANOTHER.

I was at the nationals last weekend and for every 1 non-honda bike, there were probably 3 400exs and they were winning too!

haha, that sucks for ihm..o well, serves him right for riding a POS copy cat of the 400ex, if your gona copy something atlest make it better, not worse

Well around here at the local track, the Z's are whoopin' up on the 400EX's, and not breaking either. I remember about 6 months ago all you ever saw were 400EX's, now everyone seems to be switching over the the Z400, must mean something. Not to mention I have yet to see a Z400 break at the track, I have seen Raptor's and C-Dales break, and even one 400EX, but not the Z. From what I read the Z's have been pretty reliable so far except for the few lemons, which there are even some lemon 400EX's. Most of the problems you all list have been a few incidents which you feel you need to blow out of proportion. Which happens everytime another quad comes out that is better than the "all mighty 400EX".

in the dirtwheels ex vs z shoot out the z had a bent axle just after agressive riding. not jumping or anything. the 400ex has great handling. im not sure about the z my buddy has one and i havent rode it yet. but ive seen some 400ex's go thourgh some tough stuff and come out ok. i take a honda over anything. and honda needs a new quad to spank the crap out of the z.

Dirtwheels had one of the first Z's that had axle problems, which have been fixed and DirtWheels even said so in a later issue.

I would also like to say, guys should not wear speedo's, its just...wrong. :confused2

I've ridden bolth and I'm pretty opend minded when it comes to quads.
the Z400 is a good machine, in stock form its got softer suspenion and tires that hook up too much in corners , plus they are slightly taller than a 400ex...
They feel tippy in corners compared to a 400ex, I think tires would help this problem alot though.

one reason for the massive amounts of racers on 400ex is the fact that they have been out for what, nearly 5 years now? give the suzuki/kawi more time, i am sure that you will see plenty more of them out there.

I have no experience with a z but suzuki, kawasaki, and acrticcat will NEVER see my money. Reason: R&D. suzuki stuck a dohc liquid cooled engine in a 400ex chasis and the made it in green for kawi and arcticcat will have it in black for 2004. Watch just as that 250ex wanna be comes out kawi will have the same one in green and 2 years later cat will have a black one. Multi-national companies can't do thier own R&D:rolleyes:

not when those multinational companies merge to produce one greater product....even the motocross lines of suzuki/kawi are going to be extremely similar when they are redisgned as they are being redisgned together. suzuki/kawi merged a few years ago, and suzuki has always supplied arctic cat with ATV motors

wow, i guarantee half of the ones against the Z400 havent even sat on one, thats kinda funny. I have a z400 and Ive rode my buddies 400ex and the suzuki definately outpowers the honda, hell of a lot smoother in everything and looks a lot better. The ex's to me are just a classic that needs updated. U guys can all cry about the z frames crackin.. WOW buy a $50 gusset kit, it wont kill you!!! Suzuki all the way,, screw ex's!

but honda has always made the best machine over All these years.. you cant really argue... it all started with the atc250r and atc350x then the trx250r... the rest is historyyyyy
