What's the problem here? I can run WOT in 4th and 5th with no problem, but in 1st, 2nd, 3rd the engine sputters a second or two before I shift. If I use a smaller main jet, top speed suffers. Should I lower the needle, or maybe lean out the air mixture screw. Help!!

Dude how high are you revving the machine? It kinda sounds like your hitting your rev limiter.

I've thought I might be hitting the rev limiter. If I am, then the limit is pretty low on a 250ex. I've had several motorcycles and I'm just shifting when it feels natural. I'd guess I'm shifting around 6000, but without a tach it's hard to be sure.

i had the same problem with my 400 after i piped it. i thought i was hittin the limiter too. come to find out i had too big of a main jet. went with a smaller main and fixed my problem. like yours i could only tell it cuttin out in the lower gears for some reason it wouldnt do it in 4th or 5th. but smaller jet in now and it pulls forever in the low gears and doesnt sputter at all.

I don't know the max RPM on the 250EX motor, but I'm betting that because it's a pushrod motor (as opposed to overhead cam) that it is much lower than say a 300EX or 400EX..

Thanks for the input. I dropped the main 1 size and it's a little better, but I think I am hitting the rev limit. 4th and 5th gear are ok because the motor just won't rev as high in those gears. I'll just learn to shift sooner.
