What would happen to your car if you are driving and put it in park? I ask this cuz my friend slipped and hit the shifter and put it in park, and he says it cost him 200 bucks in new brakes. would it even effect the brakes or is the park system all in the tranny?

Depends on how fast your going. If you going at i believe 10mph or above the tranny is set up so that if that happens it makes this awful grinding noise but actually the gears are slipping. Under that speed your car will lock up and who knows what kind of damage you could cause.
I don't know what is has to do with brakes. :eek2:

usually u have to push in a button on the handle or if its on the wheel u have to pull it towards u so u cant just tap it and it moves into all different gears.

also i think it would mess up the tranny not the brakes

Im with ya on the button having to be pushed in before you can move the handle. I dont know how he "slipped" but it does sound like he wasnt telling me the whole story.

I didnt think it would mess with the brakes but im no auto mechanic so I thought I would ask.

on either of my cars you dont need to pull the shifter in or push a button.. but they are kinda old

if your lucky the parking pawl just skips along and doesn't actually engage until the car slows down..

if your un-lucky it catches and expensive things break.

in either case it has nothing to do with the brakes.

unless of course your talking about the parking brake, and not the park position of the transmission.
