left or right side?
because i was thinking if it was right that you are trying to convert a 400ex into a kick start instead of e-start?

Pappy
04-11-2003, 12:55 PM
haha no kickstart

you use the xr400 side case and a hinson removable clutch cover so its easier to replace the clutch.

no i think i will hack it in to 20 pieces and make a wind chime outta the S.O.B.

That sucks. I know the feeling. I tapped my clutch case for the aftermarket oil cooler and when I put the fitting in and the locktight set real good I noticed the fitting was cracked:mad: tried to finess it but when you put a easy out in brass we all know what happend:rolleyes:

At least it cracked now and not miles from nowhere,
if indeed it was from a weak spot.

How much is the side case anyways?

Pappy
04-11-2003, 01:32 PM
it was only 125$ but i dont normally like wasting $125:p

Believe it or not JB weld worked on a crack a little worse than that on a timing cover of a 22r toyota motor for me:D

3 inches long and ran right up near the gears for the oil pump.....lasted for 18 months of pure h$ll......I call it hilbilly innovations:bandit:

Pappy
04-11-2003, 01:48 PM
lol no jb weld on my ride...lol:p

this case arrived today...but i beadblasted it before i sent it to the polishers( should have let them prep it...lmao)

the crack is on the upper side

Pappy

i imagine it could be fixed...but im not willing to use it...so if you want it make me an offer...if not i will turn it into a friggon wind chime:devil

04-11-2003, 02:01 PM
ouch, jb weld doesnt work the best, my feiend did it to his raptor clutch basket, he broek a tooth off while taking the clutch apart, jb welded it back on, and it snapped in his engine, he had to split his cases and ended up buying a hinson basket, so dont use jb weld on important stuff

ridered86
04-11-2003, 02:22 PM
jb weld is not made for the tortion that a clutch basket has to with stand, especially one of the fingers:ermm:

04-11-2003, 02:46 PM
yea, i told him, no it will hold up till i can afford a new basket, then when he pulled it off, he re0welded it back on, and i let it dry then i wa slike watch, i popped it off with my finger

Pappy
04-11-2003, 03:07 PM
pm me an offer forum....im sure it could be fixed but again, ive got everything new on the quad and a welded case just aint cuttin it:ermm:

I don't believe you can weld that it is made of Magnesium.

Im sure. the 400ex or xr400 motor isn't complex, or state of the art enough to have magnesium covers. Besides that. I know for a fact that its aluminium. If some person from duncan really told you that and you didn't misunderstand him. then I would stop taking advice from them

I know for fact they said and no I didn't misunderstand him. As for not taking advice from them, that is stupid. They are world reknown for being the biggest and best builder in the industry. The only reason I asked them is because when I first got my 400 I asked if it was possible to chrome the sidecases and he said no because it was magnessium. Really if they were wrong wh cares. They aren't famous for working on side case, but instead what is inside those sidecases. Guarantee they'll answer any question correctly and presicely on the internal engine.

i dont know what it is but the guy who tied to fix mine messed it up worse than it started, he is very good when it comes to welding alum. and after he got done he thought that it wasnt alum either

get someone really good, and post pics after you get it done

so does the xr400 case come ready to except the hinson cover, sounds too good to be true too me:huh

Pappy
04-21-2003, 12:30 AM
no the xr case needs to have the hole for the kickstarter plugged. this is accomplished by making a plug from aluminum and pressing it in.

Big - D Racing
04-21-2003, 07:11 AM
If I go out and buy and press a plug in the kickstarter hole, then can I just buy the removable cover from hinson and just put it on the 400ex? Or are there other things that have to be done?

forum
04-21-2003, 07:26 AM
would it not help to weld the plug also?? I've heard of hinsons leeking from the kick plug.

Forum- I did the same mod with the XR cover. I had my plug welded. I also had it shrunk in, no pressing. The power of liquid nitrogen. You are right it is aluminum.

Well I know its Cast aluminum. But it may be Aluminum alloy with magnesium in it. But its mainly aluminum. Magnesium has kinda of a bronze color I think. plus I don't think honda would spend the money for manesium.
