Clear coat

I just polished my oil tank and a few other things and I was going to paint a clear coat on it, has anyone done this, and does it work or would the heat of the pipe or the oil mess up the clear coat?

look on eastwood's website they have a clear coat made just for that I think it is www.eastwoodco.com or just www.eastwood.com.
