How many if you guys ride with the airbox lid off? I tried it with my 250EX and it sounded bad*****! I could also feel more power.
Does it hurt the engine at all?

Thanx

If you are going to do it, just make sure that you rejet your carb for it or you can actually lose power.

the sound of the combustion and exhaust resonates back through the carb and airbox

Do you have to clean the air filter more often?

yeah knew that it would make a sound going out through the airbox but i didnt think youd be able to hear that over the sound of the exhaust.

I ride with an open CFM aluminum air box...

I have two K&N filters so one is in the bike and the other I switchout while I am cleaning the other one. That way If I'm going to Glamis or something for more than 3 days I can change it out on the third day and just clean both when I get home...

Make sure you run an outerwear filter cover

You can actually here the engine sucking the air in and it does sound mean...

I drilled 5 one inch holes in mine and made a noticeable difference in power and sound......in the immortal words of the late Chris Farley, "me likey!" Also in case of mud, water, running to lean, etc....I can just put some ducktape over some or all the holes too! :D

I go mudding alot so I won't drill holes. Should I get an outer filter
cover.

Leave the lid on with no holes. Pull the clear airduct formed tube out and look at the tank side opening, it's about the size of a quarter. I opened mine up with a rotary dremel tool but you could hog out the entire flared inlet to the size of three quarters. It's soft plastic and cuts easily. Now she'll flow air so it's lean.

I suggest a 98-102 main, 2-2 1/2 turns out from seat on the fuel screw, add a high flow exhaust and a UNI filter and you're there.

The stock airduct (snorkle) is very restrictive this is a favorite mod.

I kleened up my snorkle as well

I just cut it off at the tank end it was faster
(some just love their dremels :blah )
and i also took of the portion in the airbox
where it is caved in..:D

I also bought a stock lid incase I know I'm going riding where
I will have to cross a river or just gonna go through a lot of
water.

That is exactly what I do but I have 6 holes in mine. The duct tape works good too.

Works great!!
I mostly ride in the Oregon dunes but I have used it in the woods
and went through "some" puddles with it and didn't have any
problems.

Look for the ads on this site, at the bottom of the page.

yea i've gotten that filter part before but the way they have you mount it to the box is retarded. It's just an outerwears air box lid.

Look on ebay.
I got mine a while back but now they are available for most
bikes. Not sure what's retarded about the way you mount it,
you just cut a hole smaller than the outerware, drill some holes
and mount it...? Took me about 15 minutes and have never had
a problem with it. I think it's much better than just taking your
lid off, though taking the lid off is free and I'm sure we all love that.

I believe you can puchase them complete now which may be better.

noooo i mean the way outerwears tells you to mount JUST THE AIRBOX COVER no the whole lid cut up thingy. You can buy just the cover, but outerwears wants you to use velcro to secure it.

The outerware for this one is the same shape as the aluminum
piece and the edges are seamed.

You know on the 250EX's airbox theres a thin sheet of rubber attached to the clips, If you removed that but kept the airbox lid on, would you get more power?

I see what you mean, but if you want to save yourself some big bucks, that mod cost like 45 bucks.

Why not just buy a outerware and cut it to lay flat, then cut into the lid the shape you want and use silicone to seal it to the inside of the lid for a clean look.

Do it that way you save yourself some serious dough. I mean it may look cool, but come on guys, it's underneath the seat.

But hey if you got the cash, then go for it.

I don't think it would hold for very long with just siliconeing
it to the inside of the box, and it wouldn't seal as well.
I don't consider anything under $50 "serious dough" for my
quad either.
I think you could definately do something similar for less but
it wouldn't seal as well or last as long.
I think drilling holes and using duct tape is a great idea also.
