Well Guys. I just finished my Ex rebuild this winter and I have yet to ride it but it is looking great and sounds great. Just waitin on tires and rear hipers..Then I will be riding again.

I have decided that rather than keep on dumpin money into the ole EX I think I would rather build a quad...

I have 2 options:

Stock 400Ex Frame CRF450. All the same chassis components as I have on my EX. Basiclly my EX with a diff engine. Which I can do the hole conversion for only 1300 bucks..

or

Build a a 250R... If I go with this idea then I will have a full aftermarket rolling chassis with LT Shocks A arms and a LT Rear Shock. Along with Possibly a ESR Powervalve Engine.

I can do this project (With Power Valve) for about $1500 after I part out my EX. Or For the same price as my EX once it is parted out..

I can't decide... Help me out. I figure I can get just about the same or close to the same HP outta a 250R with it still being reliable as a CRF.

What do You Guys Think?Gimme some Reasons on 250R or CRF.

Remember the CRF will be in the stock Frame...

As far as powerplant I would definetly choose the CRF over the R.

But a stock EX frame cannot compare to a full aftermarket frame with long travel all around......

Its a tough decision

In the end I think the R would be the better machine.

I am thinkin with a ESR PowerValve I don't think the R will have a Prob handling the CRF.....

crf because its alot less maitence than the 250r

and personally i like the sound of the loud 4 stroke as opposed to the whine of a 2

keep you ex!!! lol. Well not the stock 40ex framed 450f. Youd have to buy a new frame for it in the end anyway

crf because if you did the r you would already have it pretty much modded out to the point where it is start it loose its reaibly a little bit

but with a crf you have a stock motor so you have alot more potental in that motor :)

i say the R just because its a quad transmission and 2 stroke power is fun

04-08-2003, 11:57 AM
oh yeah the crf motor is pretty much milked for hp although im sure u can squezze some more out of it

As for the Reliability...I do not plan on building the engine to the max or anywhere close.. I weight a hole 150 pounds. and a Plain ole 265 with some portin will suit me just fine.

I just figured I would get a powervalve to keep those boys with a CRF mouths shut...

Most of the moddin on the R will go into Chassis and Suspension.

here is what i would do if i was you, and this is prolly wat im gonna do next winter,,,

buy a crf, or yz dirtbike (whole thing) and take the engine, exhaust, carb, radiator and all the rest of the parts you need from it, then do a conversion in your ex frame,,

then part the rest of what you have from the dirtbike, and make alittle money back,, enough to buy an aftermarket frame,

and then take everything from your 400ex and put it on the aftermarket frame with the engine and

then take what you have left over from the ex and sell it (frame, engine, exhaust, and all that *****)

and ull prolly only loose like 1500, to 2000

sounds alot more compllicated then it is butt... thats what im gonna do, cause to me it seems to be the way to build a crf, or yz for the least amount of money:blah :blah

Do people ever bore CRF's? To maybe just 500 or something?

theres no point since they are aleady equipt with so much hp, and u wont be able to race anything over 440, so alot of people alctually ddown size em

How much do you plan to get out of your parted 400? I was thinking about the same desicion, but i have now figured that the CRF will be way to expensive so i might end up keeping the ex or something......i would do the r, i would like to know what i could get out of my 400ex if i parted it.

I would say CRF because by the time you mod the R to keep with the CRF, the R will be pretty modified and will require more maintanence, induce more wear on the engine, and the CRF would be stock with all that power. I would go ahead and when you run into a little more money, go for an aftermarket frame. I also want to start a project soon, but I don't have a lot of money so I need to find a junker R with just a good frame, and hopefully running motor in decent condition for cheap and build it as I get money. Good luck whichever route you go.

with that chassi and motor, that R would manhandle that crf all over on any track, get the R

why not do both?i think you can utilize the same radiator and your gonna end up welding mounts on so why not weld on a few more and be able to pick your pony depending on where youre gonna ride or simply what you feel like riding.you may have seen this already done by adam sick,i think thats who it was, with a yz426 and a 250r motor in a 400ex frame.he didnt know how long it would take because everytime he switched them he had to weld on new mounts but figured once they got that taken care of it would only take a few hours.just something to think about.if you want more info i'll try to dig up that old issue of dirt wheels.

Well i figured it all out and i can get atleast 6 grand outta my EX if I part it out.

Also I will have 1500 or so to stick into it.

So I will have 7500 to build a Quad. A CRF for 7500 would not be that trick..

A 250R would be reat if builtfrom ground up for 7500.
