i would do for the suspension:

extneded arms
new brake shoes (if it is older than a 03)
a set of tag bars
shocks
new tires wheels (i reccomend beadlocks) like douglas theryre the strongest
new wider axle
nerf bars (pro pegs)
ac bumper
* you can pick up alot of this stuff used or on ebay*
engine:
port n' polish
new reed cage and reeds
k&n filter
pipe a (vitos or fmf stay away from dg crap)
a vitos degree key
a good tune up
and a oil block off kit

that all i think u will need!
:) if u got all those mods i wouldnt mind having a blaster.......................i would kill 400ex's and stock r's all day with that thing............

If your getting a 02 or lower Blaster the first thing to do is brakes. Then get rid of that junk oil injector block off. Constantly cheak over bolts for being loose (they rattle themselves apart over time). Get an LRD or Toomey pipe and a UNI air filter. At this stage it will probably still be behind a stock 400. Then get some 18 or 20 inch grooved Turf Tamers and a 14 tooth front sprocket. Now after getting that basic stuff get some good suspension and extended a-arms and axle. For Blaster a-arms I think Burgard makes good ones. Now get some nice motor mods (240 kit, port &polish, etc.) It is now a stock 400 killer. Probably even beat it in an MX race. But good luck once the 400 gets some mods.

BTW, be prepared to fix it and fix it often. My friends 01 Blaster has blown up 4 times so far.

I say go for it. As long as you maintain it, it will function properly. I heard from a guy who bought the hydrolic brakes for his blaster that they were cr@p. He bought some conversion kit off of ebay though. I agree with freeride that the blaster with a pipe will keep up or beat a stock 400.

my cousins has a fmf pipe, aktive reeds, reed spacer and wiseco piston and it has no trouble keepin up with mine til i hit 5th, well have to see with my 416, most important thing is maintence on a blaster, id get hydro brakes and nacs block off for oil injection

msl yes a piped blastrer will stay with a stock 400...........................sad to say but its true

:huh :huh :macho :macho

Must be something wrong with your and freerides 400

My sons blaster is piped and K&N air filter, no lid, reed spacer, oil injector block off, wiseco piston. It will spank a warrior
with no problem but will not beat a stock 400. but i could be wrong. I have never seen a piped blaster beat a stock 400 in a drag and i know dang well it wont beat it on a MX track with equal riders.

My son's blaster has not given us any problems at all(starts right up every time and runs great) I will put this theory to a test the next time we go to st joes and i will let you guys know the results.
I will have to find a stock 400 to race though.

blaster with a good clutching can easily stay withone i got beat by a piped one with a expert rider on it (he has raced for 17yrs) but man he was fast but when he got on my 400 he spanked me too..........................:( but with good clutching a modded blaster will beat a stock ex.....................

stick with the red riders. blasters are fast but dont stay together long. my buddy has one and he is always stopping every 5 mins to adjust something. the 250ex isnt as fast but it will go without something falling off.

A piped Blaster isn't even clost to a stock 400ex. I have 2 Blasters and a 400ex, which I rode stock before doing the 416. Blasters are great bang-for-the-buck but let's be real, they're not in a 400ex's league...

i have to admit i thought blaster where junk but they are so fun to ride... ever since jermy bought his blaster i have gain respect for them... he has no promblems with it .... he is hard on it the first week he had it we was at 88 and we had to cross a creek and the water (lol) took over his blaster and pushed him into a water hole nose deep we had to fish him out and it started right up ...

before he got his holeshots he used to burn rubber on black top which is a big no no for clutch ... but it still runs good and shifts good.... he is hard on otaht thing especially when it rains and i drag him down a hill that i tell him he can make up but and the back of my mind i know its a tad bit to slick for his holeshoots.. but we always find a new way to get up the hill so its all fun sometimes he gets mad at me for talking him into it sometimes he just laughs at his self for even lessoning to me ... but oh well i rather have a blaster than a 250 ex they have nothing... there slow !!!! i have a buddy with a e series pipe and no airbox and i was considering buying that for my gf but after riding it there is no excitment to them...

What type of riding do you do? A new blaster is probably a better mxer than the 250 but if your are trail riding or racing XC the 250 is so much better. I just ran an xc race and smoked all of the crapsters. It just depends on what kind of condition they are in too. you might be able to buy one make it run and sell it for more $. But hey its all up to you.
